failing disk-on-key

A friend of mine has a disk-on-key that’s failing. He says the light goes on when he plugs it into the USB port, but the computer won’t recognize the drive. He tried it on another computer and the same thing happened.

Any ideas about trying to get it working again so he can get the data off?

I’d need a little more specifics. Can he find it in Disk Management? Tell him to Run “diskmgmt.svc”. Either type it in the box in the start menu (Windows 7 or Vista) or Choose Start -> Run and type it in the box which appears (XP).

If it shows up there, then you can use a tool called PhotoRec to recover all the files to your hard drive, and then copy it to another flash drive (i.e. disk-on-key).

If it doesn’t show up, then it’s a hardware problem. And then I have no idea. This is why important data should not be saved on a flashdrive alone.
