Fallout 3 starting tips?

GAHHHH!

WOULD YOU GUYS STOP CHEATING! I don’t know why this bothers me…to each his own…but why bother playing the game? Just say you won and do something else.

My son does this and it bugs the ever living hell out of me. Why not just get a mod that makes you always make your speech challenge? Why not a mod that allows all weapons/armor to be 100% repaired. Why not a mod that allows you to kill with one shot?

When do you actually grow a pair and play the game without cheating?

Cheating would be typing: `tgm

What Hoopy Frood described was meta-gaming.

Besides, it’s a single player game - why do you care?

No…cheating is reloading after a failed speech challenge.

I shouldn’t care. Hey…it’s your game. To blatantly suggest such an action publicly bugs the living shit out of me for some reason. I know it’s just a game…but to cheat is to make it completely, totally a waste of time. I mean…if you cheat you can never really say you beat the game…because…well…you cheated.

To avoid further hijack:

I’m a completionist. I like getting the optional conversations that won’t occur/areas that can’t be accessed without succeeding at speech challenges.

You never have to succeed at a speech challenge to finish the game. And usually when the successful speech challenge gives me a shortcut, I’ll do it the hardway just to see it all. I’ve visited every room in every map I’ve been to, whether I needed to or not, just because I want to see the whole game. I’ll repeat conversations over and over just to see what the different information branches give me, even if I don’t really get any new info and the various branches merge to the same point anyway.

So if I metagame to do it, so be it. I still beat the game, because my metagaming doesn’t change the overall outcome of any quests I undertake.

I’m only about level 5 and still wearing the Armored Vault 101 Jumpsuit that the Megaton shopkeeper gave me for the first part of her long questline (for the +5 small guns stat) and the Motorcycle Helmet for the 5DR. None of the raider armor so far has stats. *At what point should I be using different armor, and how will I find it?
*
Whenever I come across “ingredients” for any of the crafted weapons, I save them in my house for future use. Should I be selling all this stuff instead? So far vendors aren’t selling great armor or weapons, so I mainly just buy stimpaks.

I’m playing on PC, patched to 1.4.06, have a few mods and 4 DLC’s. I play only offline, don’t care about online achievements.Should I patch to 1.6?

Also, I found that my .exe would not update to any patch if there were still DLC’s in the Data folder. I had to move them all out of there before patching. *Is that typical? *

If you have all 4 DLCs you should update to patch 1.6. I’m surprised the DLC even works without the patch.

For armor; keep playing through the main quest. You get power armour training about halfway through.

If you plan on building your own weapons (bump your repair skill, also you’ll can use a workbench, like the one in Craterside Supply) keep the stuff you find (I’m assuming you have the schematics?), the weapons you can make are some of the most useful. Particularly the dart gun and shishkebab.

I haven’t bought schematics yet, just saving up anything that can be used to make anything. Should I just save up for a few items instead? 3 schematics per item?

All 4 DLCs load, that’s all I’m sure of (I get radio signals or notice). I don’t know if they actually work.

You should patch up, even if you have to move the DLCs back to the folder GFWL put them in. They’re essential for DLCs (1.5 makes the level cap bump of Broken Steel possible, for instance. No idea what 1.6 does, but Point Lookout needs it).

Schematics are pretty rare and you won’t find 3 schematics for sale anywhere. Most you’ll get from exploring, a few are quest rewards.

They’re not an essential part of the game, but make things more fun. Although if you know what you need for them it’s a good idea to get the stuff when you see it and store it for when you get the schematics, so you don’t have to go walkabout for the parts later on.

If you stick objects in some random container somewhere, does the game remember it? I have a bunch of crap I’m carrying that might be useful later (scrap metal, random parts) but I need to clear some weight off me.

Edit: And how do you determine if an item is useful? I have items like “scrap metal” and “pilot light” - as far as I know they might be junk, but then again, what if you use the pilot light to build a flamethrower later in the game? Any way I can figure out what to keep?

You’ll see some different armours around as you level, like Talon Merc armour and Combat armour; although they lack stat boosts, the DR (damage reduction) is significantly higher than the Armoured Jumpsuit. To an extent, pick the armour you like the look of and don’t worry about the numbers; beyond that, if you find you’re getting beat up a lot, then get armour with higher DR values. The stat boosts start to mean less as your skills increase as well, which can make the DR more valuable when you start dealing with Deathclaws, Giant Radscorpions, and Super Mutant Masters with miniguns.

Never assume a container out in the wasteland is safe. The ones in your house are (apart from a few rare bugs).

You can’t unless you’ve got a schematic that says it’s needed. In your case, the scrap metal can be sold to Walter in Megaton (or traded to Winthrop in Underworld), the pilot light is used to create the shishkebab (essentially a flaming sword).

Everything you wanted to know about schematics:

I just started, how do I go about getting that house?

At the centre of Megaton is a disaster waiting to happen. One way or another, the situation needs to be resolved. Chat up Mr. Burke in the bar or the Sheriff about the issue…or both, if you like. This particular choice has consequences, but either way you end up with a bit of a domicile.

I can’t get it to patch up to 1.6 no matter what I do with the DLC files! I’ve got >$100 into this damn game and I spend more time trying to patch and DLC it than playing it. I’m about ready to quit at level 5!

Are you trying to patch through GFWL? I avoid GFWL like the plague; try downloading the patch direct from Bethesda’s Fallout 3 updates page.

If you are already; What errors is it throwing up?

I’m patching from Beth. No errors, it almost completes the update, then launches the game, thus not completing. The fallout.exe remains at 1.4.

This guy had the same problem - apparently the solution is killing the game process before it launches.

Thanks. I saw that the last time I had this problem, but it’s just about impossible to do. I’m reinstalling now for the umpteenth time!

Carry on, please don’t mind me. There have been many great suggestions in this thread.
