Never really used the lasers much, personally. Even the named one…I just didn’t find it had the hitting power. For long range engagements I liked the named sniper rifle, for close up engagements I used the named SMG, the Chinese Assault Rifle (or better yet the named one of these), or the combat shotgun (there is a named one of these as well). The plasma rifle was pretty good as well. Also, if you find it, the alien blaster is kick ass (especially the named one).
Before I found all this fancy stuff though I used the 10mm pistol for close in work (the .32 pistol was complete crap…wish they had a nice .45 in the game) and the hunting rifle for longer engagements (though if you go to the town with the land mines you can get a sniper rifle…if you can get it repaired and find enough .308 ammo for it).
Protectron’s Gaze has eight separate beams. The significance of this is if you have a high luck or the Better Criticals perk, you’re doing huge amounts of damage with it in non-VATS mode because you’re guaranteed to get at least one critical and possibly as many as two or three with each shot. Fire while sneaking and every single beam gets an automatic critical for truly COLOSSAL amounts of damage. You can one-shot a Deathclaw easily. In fact, I avoid energy weapons simply because the game becomes a cakewalk on even the hardest level.
Well, individual laser shots don’t hit terribly hard, but the lasers are more accurate than guns and have low action point costs, so it balances out. I didn’t find it very hard to get started, either, though I do use some repair mods - with vanilla degradation/repair it’d be rather tough in the beginning I guess. Ammo’s a bit tricky early on, especially for the rifles, but there’s a couple shops that often have some.
Just because there’s an overpowered unique weapon in the game doesn’t mean you have to use it. Heck, I had to read up on how to get that one because I’d have never resolved that quest that way on my own.
I went to the mentioned barn to try for a random event, and realized I’d already been there, encountering Mel. Will there be no more random events in that location?
Another person who takes scrap metal is the leader of the Brotherhood Outcasts. He’ll give you a choice of 5.56 ammo, stimpacks, or something else which I forget.
Probably the best guy to give all your scrap metal to.
I just discovered a great mod called Fellout. It removes the greenish-yellow filter that makes everything look the same awful color. Seeing blue skies really improved my enjoyment of the game!
Sorry if I’m being a pest. Is there a shorter way to end conversations, without needing to scroll down and find the “leave conversation” option? A mod or a keystroke maybe?
Makes the game look too much like Oblivion. The haze and dirty brown monotony are part of the appeal. The dismal landscape and washed-out palette are what give Fallout its moody feel of post-apocalyptic dreariness and gloom.
I fast-traveled, landing on the body of someone carrying a Fatman and Mini-nuke. Earlier, I looted someone with a Flamer and its ammo. Is there any point keeping either of these, since I’m small guns (and maybe energy weapons later on)?
I made a Shishkebab and am wondering if its worth keeping, since I’m not melee.
I used the Fatman in the defense of Bigtown, a pyrrhic victory really, as I fought off the attackers, but killed most of the town too.
C’est la vie in Fallout 3.
One thing that’s really starting to bug me is when I unload a full clip directly into my enemy’s face… and he keeps coming. I feel like I’m shooting them with a popgun. I could understand it (sort of) if they were wearing helmets, but as it is, it’s pretty ridiculous.
I installed the RobCo Certification perk mod, and I must admit that I’m loving having my robotic buddies. I just wish I could have them carry stuff for me- I’m always on the knife edge of overencumbrance. I’d originally intended this guy to be a dashing, debonair sniper/swashbuckler, but he’s actually ended up being a bit of a mad scientist with a laser rifle.
Get a follower and load him down with all of your stuff. That’s what I do. If you give him some decent armor and a weapon he can even fight, too…though generally I just use them as portable pack mules.
I wasn’t melee either, and the Shishkebab was still amazingly useful… in VATS. Since it’s point blank range, it’s almost impossible to miss, even with just your STR’s worth of melee points (I don’t remember whether I had the melee bobblehead at that point). Three headshots with a flaming sword sting a bit It’s also good for saving ammo when facing simple mobs like dogs, molerats, melee raiders, radscorps, feral ghouls and the like. Why waster precious bullets and durability points on your named guns on those wankers, when you can just slash-and-burn ?
Make sure you explore all of Scrapyard, the place is pretty big and he’s easy to miss. If you have done so and he’s simply not there he can turn up in a random encounter.
