So after all of the drama the last two days I went ahead and downloaded The Pitt tonight and played through it for about three hours and I think might nearing the end. (not sure, gonna find out soon…)
Opinions?
Personally, I like it! Much better than Anchorage, which was little more than a FPS, with real roleplaying elements and decisions to be made. I liked walking into the slave compound empty handed and having to put together an arsenal from scratch again. Though the autoaxe might be a bit overpowered. My character is not a melee specialist, (level 20 and melee skill was only 19), but I was still killing all the Trogs in the Steelyard in only one hit using VATS.
I’ve made it through The Hole with minimal difficulty and I’m getting ready to talk to Ashur face to face for the first time. (If anyone is anything like me, you’re ready to turn this this place inside out.)
If anyone was hesitant about picking this up because of Anchorage, I just have to say, don’t be. It’s much more in line with one of the more extended quests in the original game and I’m quite happy with it. (There’s probably 3 to 5 hours worth of gameplay in it). I just have to say that I hope Broken Steel doesn’t have the same technical problems when it comes out, as I’m definitely looking forward to it now.
Questions? Comments? I understand that there have been still been isolated problems with some people’s downloads though I haven’t had any problems myself. Has anyone else encountered technical issues?
5 to 6 hours seems to be the max. I just finished and I’m on my way back to the Capital Wasteland. I think I clocked in around five and a half hours.
No, not even close. As I said above, there’s about 6 hours worth of content here, give or take. The download is only about 500MB, it couldn’t be anywhere near the size of the main map.
Allow me to elaborate some. “The Pitt” is a specific quest with a small area individually suited to wandering around in. (The quest itself has both a “good and evil” conclusion depending on what your inclinations are.) If I were to compare it to an existing area of the game, I’d say it’s slightly larger than Rivet City. With one section, (The Steelyard), designated for combat and exploration. Though I would hasten to add that the Steelyard is deceptively large. There’s one section entwined around a tower that allows you to ascend vertically. At the top you can see all of post-apocalyptic Pittsburgh, though you can’t explore the entire city.
I’m waiting for Broken Steel (which might be early May - good news is the longer they work on it the better it’ll be, bad news is…early May? It was originally pegged for…now!) to raise the cap, then playing through O:P and TP for the XP points. Provided Bethesda release them bundled in a CD, I have no inclination to faff about with GFWL.
I can understand not wanting to mess around with GFWL. MY system can’t support Fallout 3 though so I’ve playing on the 360 and downloading the DLC through XBL.
About Broken Steel, it’s supposed to raise the level cap to 30, and up till this point I had just been assuming that the DLC itself would have enough content to support an extra 10 levels. But I was just reading about it on The Vault and it says that BS is supposed to be the same length as Anchorage, and The Pitt. Neither of which lasted long enough I think to gain an extra 10 levels. (Maybe 3 or 4 at most). It had never occurred to me you might not be able to reach level 30 just through BS, but that may be the case. Saving up and playing all three expansions might not be a bad idea.
OF course there’s still areas of the main game I haven’t been to yet, (Girdershade, Big Town, and The Oasis have all managed to elude me thus far), so maybe I’ll wait till BS comes out before delving into those sections.
Why did they make the level cap so damn low! :smack:
I hit 20 well before I ever finished the game the first time, and I was shocked when I saw how much had been left untouched. I’ve still been playing off and on just because I find the world so fascinating to explore.
I’ve glanced through some of the mod databases and sometimes I really wish my system could run it, but c’est la vie…
Saving quests for Broken Steel might be a very good idea. According to an interview I read a while back the XP required to go to level 30 from level 20 will be as much/more than than it takes to go from level 1 to 20. IIRC, the phrasing was that only hardcore players would reach level 30.
How? I played the game straight on my first go around, and then I played as an evil bastard and I used just about every cheat code known to man to make myself a complete badass, and I still cannot get past level 20 even if I give myself maximum XP.
You also have to watch out for the game locking up when you cheat, because after you level up it wants you to try to increase skills that you have already cheated up to 100.
Level is always capped at 20; experience gained at level 20 is not counted. That’s just in vanilla Fallout 3, though. Lute Skywatcher correctly notes that there are plenty of mods that raise the cap (as well as skills and the ability to play on past the ending, if you like) past the vanilla restrictions.
Because of how the karma titles are wired if you’re evil the game will crash if you’re evil and over level 20, though.
I’ve known about Broken Steel’s level 30 for a while (and if you’re already level 40 or somesuch, I predict quite the clusterfuck), so haven’t tried any mods to increase the cap. Have a look on Fallout 3 Nexus if you’re interested.
Should do, pretty much every other mod I’ve tried comes into effect straight away. I’ve not been interested in increasing the cap past 20, but there’s a few mods (have a look around here) floating around that do so and are apparently interdependent on each other (so you don’t get stuck on the leveling up screen and so on).
