Fallout 3

Love this game for the weird and wacky nonsense you get out in the wastes, it really rewards you for exploring (particularly the other vaults - without giving too much away, it’s incredibly fortunate that you were born in 101 and none of the others!).

Anyone been bombed by the Enclave? I was wandering around the back of the Capitol Building observing Talon company scrapping with some super-muties. They won, so I finished off the survivors and went for some looty-loot, when out of nowhere a vertibird comes flying over the top of the Capitol Building and dropped three mini-nukes on my ass! Reloading it was fun to see the survivors get bombed to oblivion, so it’s perhaps scripted in the area. Still amusing.

Can’t find it now but someone mentioned wanting subtitles for the incidental conversations in settlements. There’s an option for this under Display Settings.

Having trouble with one of the quests and wonder if anyone here could help me out:

I’m in Little Lamplight and I can’t figure out how to get into the Vault there. Everyone says I need to speak to the Mayor but when I talk to him there doesn’t seem to even be a question in there about the Vault. To get in I rescued the kids in Paradise Falls (I basically just went in and killed every raider) but I haven’t seen any other quests in there. As far as i can tell I’ve talked to everyone in the place though it’s hard to tell as they wander about. I’ve been in and out of this place multiple times but no idea what to do next.

Any help on this would be appreciated. I won’t be able to get back to the game until this weekend (another trip) but I’m definitely stuck on this part right now.

I’ve been wandering around the Wastes for hours, but I can’t for the life of me find Paradise Falls. I have a caravan trade route map, but every time I head toward one of the points on it, I get sidetracked by something crazy. There’s this little community way down south where-- well, you’ll see. At any rate, I refuse to cheat and look at the map on gamefaqs; that would take all the fun out of it.

You might’ve hit a bug. There should be a dialog option to ask him about getting access to the vault. Barring that, I believe that there’s a ‘back way’ in that doesn’t require him to grant authorization to open the gate to the vault.

You need to go speak to Princess, I think. She should be off by herself by the door that leads to the Vault. OTOH, there’s a second way to get in, for which you need decent computer skills and to talk to Joseph.

Yeah, but she’ll only let you in if the mayor has already given you authorization.

Yes, but I think talking to her may add the ability to talk to the Mayor about it to your list of options.

Hrmmm… that shouldn’t be the case. I got authorization to enter the vault just from speaking to the mayor when I first met him at the gate. At least, that’s how I remember it.

I think I had talked to her about it before I talked to the Mayor about it, so maybe I just didn’t get to see the option being there already.

Could someone point me in the direction of Little Lamplight? I can’t seem to find it at all. Also, I’m level 19 now, and I’ve explored maybe half the map. I just stopped in Underworld last night. There’s such an incredible amount of stuff to see and do. Have you guys seen the buildings you can explore that don’t show up on your map? I’ve found several office buildings and a car dealership, none of which are marked on the main map.

I talked to Princess already. IIRC the only thing I got out of the conversation was that she wouldn’t tell me how she got her name (no one else will either or it doesn’t come up in the dialog box) and that if I want to get past the back gate she guards I need to talk to the Mayor. But like I said, when I talk to the Mayor there isn’t a dialog for going into the vault…only one for buying fungus (which he won’t sell me for some reason).

You talked to the Scribe in the Citadel about the back way into 87, right?

No…I haven’t done that part of the quest tree at all (on the advice of a friend). In fact

I haven’t visited 3 Dog at all with this charter yet. My friend said I should explore around and do a lot of the secondary quests before doing the main quest line. I didn’t think Little Lamplight was related to the main quest story line…is it?

It is related to the main quest. In fact, the main quest progresses quite rapidly once you enter that vault, although you still get a chance to explore after it.

Ok:

So, I’ve done the Wastelands Survival Guide, went to the air craft carrier and done several quests there including rescuing the little boy and finding him a home, rescued the kids and whacked all the slavers, gotten the constitution out of the national archives and a bunch of other secondary quests. Is it pretty much time to tackle the main quests now? I want to get power armor training (I’ve got several completely repaired sets but can’t use any of them) and I think the only way to do that is to start the main quest line and get that from the Brotherhood of Steel…yes?

-XT

Ooooooooooooh!

Yeah, you can’t get into the vault until you get further along on the main quest, and you can’t get power armor until you’re close to the end of the main quest.

Heh, I got some power armor, but it said I wasn’t trained to use it. And I haven’t done any of the main quest.

You get it all over. I actually had so many sets that I just used my repair skills to take one set to the max then sold the rest off. My favorite way to get PA is to simply let the Brotherhood guys (or the Outcasts) fight it out with raiders until a few of them die off, then whack the raiders and loot the dead (you don’t incur any negative karma or rep by looting the dead guys). My house in Megaton is brimming full of items and materials.

BTW, has anyone spent caps on decorating their house? If so, has anyone tried the themes? I was thinking of getting the science theme, but no idea what that’s going to do to the house. I was also thinking it would be cool to put in my own Nuka-Cola machine and a jukebox (and more practically a work bench of my own). At this point in the game I have tons of caps and lots of sell items…and really there just isn’t much to buy out there (I wish I could find someone who sells .308 ammo in quantity as well as sniper rifles…I’m down to my last one and it’s at about half damage atm).

Yeah, time to work on the main quest. You can still go exploring after escaping from The Enclave to see if there are any more side quests around until you start the last part of the main quest: Take it Back!

There probably is one side quest that you haven’t activated yet. You need to get far enough in the main quest and in the vicinty of Megaton to get the Vault 101 distress signal.
