Fallout over Iranian execution of German national?

Iran has been on a bit of an execution spree lately, killing hundreds of people so far this year. Just the other day, they killed a German national and US resident, Jamshid Sharmahd. He was kidnapped from Dubai and taken to Iran, where he was held until his execution.

Predictably enough, Germany seems rather upset. They’ve shut down all of the Iranian consulates, and withdrew their envoy. The US has been pretty critical, as well.

Do you think this action will have real consequences for the Iranian regime? Perhaps a tightening of sanctions from the EU? Or is the diplomatic situation too delicate for much more than finger wagging?

Iran is unpopular enough in the West that I think the execution of one obscure person won’t make much of a difference. I’d be a bit surprised if it even reached the “finger wagging” stage.

I’m not enough of an expert in international politics to speculate what one random execution will lead to, but I am smart enough to notice that the Iranian population writ large are very smart people that disagree with the religious autocracy they live in, and don’t support their despotic government.
