I only discovered the Fametracker forums last year - but man, I did I love them. Great discussions on music, movies, TV, books and celebrities.
I think I will observe a brief period of mourning.
I used to hang there, before I found the Dope. Definitely some world-class snark.
I knew they were closing, but what exactly was the reason?
Not going to direct link, but if you go to LJ and search Interests: Fametracker, there is a community there called “fametrackers” that has links and discussions of its demise.
Long story short: the official reason is money, but more likely heavy trolling in response to bad mod decisions (resentment built up over a long period of time).
I think they were just sick of moderating the boards and used lack of money as their excuse. They claimed it was too difficult to switch to a pay-to-post system, like how it is here. The Jesus thread that was started during the final hours was one of the funniest things I’ve ever read. If anyone’s interested, there’s a huge discussion of this over at fandom wank.
There’s also a Yahoo Group called Displaced Snark that was put together last week to discuss the demise of Fametrackers .
Arien, I just now finished reading the “Jesus” thread myself–there are very few things I’ve laughed harder at online than that. A full copy of it can be found in the files of the Yahoo Group mentioned above.
