I was watching Family Affair, I have never seen it before, they run it overnights.
Anyway Sissy asks Mr French where he was born
Sissy) Where were you born?
French) London
Sissy) The West End, of course
What is up with the part “Of couse.” I mean I looked up the West End and it said it’s a theatre district but French is a butler. What’s the connection?
I think traditionally the West End has been considered more posh with fashionable residences and shops, while the East End had warehouses, slums, and Jack the Ripper.
People of the East End are traditionally seen as cockney. It has the docks and has for centuries been a very tough area.
The toffs, people with staff, lived in the West End. The division was seen with pride from both sides. People of the West End looked down on those from the East End as little better than scum, and those from the East End saw their counterparts as no-chin, inbred, lay-about twits. Clearly the discription of the people of the East End is invalid and grows out of narrow mindedness.
(Can you tell I lived in Stepney? [East End])
It is much like Brooklyn vs Park Avenue of New York with less social movement between the two.
Interesting analogy. Do East-End women stand on street corners, waiting or West-End matrons to drive up and hire them as day-maids like in the US?
Other analogies between London & NYC, such as Jersey vs Essex girls? Did London get a Russian mafia, too?
New Yorkers weren’t allowed to have in-sink garbage disposals for years, being told that the cities sewers were too old and weak to handle the waste. Did Londoners have to do without for the same reason?
And is “Sorry Luv,” the same as “Have a nice day?”
What station is carrying Family Affair reruns? My wife would love that!
