It wasn’t incorporated into New York City until 1898, and does somewhat retain a separate identity. The baseball team was known as the Brooklyn Dodgers until moving to Los Angeles after the 1957 season. Also, the opening credits of the TV sitcom Welcome Back, Kotter featured a sign which read Welcome To Brooklyn, Fourth Largest City in America. Hon. Sebastian Leone, Borough President. Indeed, the borough would trail only New York City (which would remain the most populous), Los Angeles, and Chicago in the rankings were Brooklyn to secede from the “Big Apple”.
