Here is the complete list and some quotes. I ensured some older movies were mixed in. Monty Python is the single most quoted comedy on the SDMB, so I gave there most popular movie the #1. The list was arbitrary, but we have had many threads on favorite movies, favorite comedies, I used the AFI comedy list and the IMDB comedy lists for input. I then massaged it down to a Dope related list. I left The Philadelphia Story on the list for the sake of C. K. Dexter Haven & Tracy Lord. I was surprised no one mentioned Ghostbusters, that seems to come up a lot on the Dope.
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)
Duck Soup (1933) * Gentlemen, Chicolini here may talk like an idiot, and look like an idiot, but don’t let that fool you: he really is an idiot. I implore you, send him back to his father and brothers, who are waiting for him with open arms in the penitentiary. I suggest that we give him ten years in Leavenworth, or eleven years in Twelveworth.*
Young Frankenstein (1974) * Wait Master, it might be dangerous… you go first. *
Airplane! (1980) * Surely you can’t be serious.*
Life of Brian (1979)
Blazing Saddles (1974)
Ghostbusters (1984) If you miss this it will of course mean: Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together - mass hysteria.
National Lampoon’s Animal House (1978)
The Princess Bride (1987) You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means
Arsenic And Old Lace (1944) * Have you ever tried to persuade him that he wasn’t Teddy Roosevelt?
Abby Brewster: Oh, no.
Martha Brewster: Oh, he’s so happy being Teddy Roosevelt. *
This Is Spinal Tap (1984) These go to eleven.
The Philadelphia Story (1940) * This is the Voice of Doom calling. Your days are numbered, to the seventh son of the seventh son. *
I put clues for both teams in the Question & Note.
I noted that I made the list Dope oriented. Monty Python is the most quotes comedy on the Dope and Holy Grail and Life of Brian are there most popular movies on the Dope and among geeks everywhere.
Duck Soup of the Marx Brothers’ Movies was the most popular, most highly rated on AFI & IMDB, so I made it #2. I tried to keep the list to only 11, but I wanted to keep Philadelphia Story on the list as noted in the post.
Spinal Tap is too obvious for #11, as was noted by Blue team members.
Overall Blazing Saddles & Young Frankenstein rated higher in popularity on the IMDB, Box office on IMDB, on the AFI list and in the various SDMB threads.
I mentioned ‘Talking’, so people would avoid Silent, but still think old.
Princess Bride might be the second most quoted comedy on the Dope.
Airplane! is another very popular SDMB comedy and does well on the IMDB & AFI.
Ghostbusters, Animal House and Blues Brothers are all popular on the Dope, Blues Brothers did the worse of the three on the IMDB & AFI.
I was down to Arsenic And Old Lace (1944) or Harvey for an older Comedy and Arsenic And Old Lace did better on the IMDB & AFI.
See it all makes sense
