Has anyone done this? My husband and I did some travelling and volunteer work before we had kids (teaching English, building wells) and have come to miss it in the last few years. We’ve been looking into doing it as a family and I’d love to hear from someone who’s done it with kids.
Our kids right now are 2 and 5, and most programs we’re researching have a minimum age of 8, so I guess we have some time before we can actually get started, but I’m curious about a few things.
Where did you go? (We’re particularly interested in going to just about anywhere in Africa next time.). Do you have any particular skills? (My husband used to work as a builder and is now an elementary school teacher. I’m, um, well, I’m enthusiastic.) Any tips on the application process, especially as pertaining to the kids? How old were your kids when you went? How worried were you about your kids as far as disease, political unrest, other random dangers not prevelant in your native land? Did you find the kids could actually do anything? Or were they sort of just along for the ride? Either way, did you find they got a lot out of the experience? Were there any cons? Best part? Worst part? If you’re willing to share the program you went with, that would be awesome too.
