Because his was a strongly catholic family, and catholic tradition is that any body parts removed during autopsy are supposed to be retrieved and placed in the casket before burial.
(Minor things like blood samples, microscopic slides of parts, etc. don’t count. An old priest once told me that if it was less than the chalice-worth of blood & water that came out when Christ’s side was pierced with a spear, it doesn’t need to be there for the burial. But I think that is just a tradition, not actual church doctrine.)

Would that it were so easy! If several ships, submarines, radar, sonar and various other means of detection couldn’t find Air France 447 within a more-or-less known geographical area over the span of the month the data recorder pingers were assumed operable, and several search efforts thereafter, then I don’t think your plan would work too well!
I guess Air France 447 F-GZCP qualifies for this thread, at least for now!
On a similar note, the data recorders from the planes that hit the WTC were never found either; presumably melted and destroyed in the fires and collapses.
I realize that my Peace-Corps-volunteer niece <> the slain POTUS and that it isn’t 1963 any more, but FWIW my Catholic niece was laid to rest last week with neither her heart nor her brain, as the M.E.s are still trying to determine her cause of death.
