Famous people with animal names

Jimmie Foxx deserves recognition here.

During his home run-hitting heyday with the Athletics and Red Sox he was known as “The Beast” in reference to his physique and powerful swing. There was a joke around the major leagues that “he wasn’t scouted, he was trapped”.

Two-time Oscar nominee Lee J. Cobb

Two-time Oscar winner Sean Penn

And then there’s Ciarán Hinds!

How about Jeff Grubb, of Dungeons & Dragons fame?

Robin Leach, of Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous

(Robin was taken, but AFAICT Leech was still up for grabs)

Carla Woodcock

Nick Drake, legendary English folkie.

Olivia Swann — NCIS: Sydney

Ruth Codd — The Midnight Club and The Fall Of The House Of Usher

You might know Laura Haddock from DA VINCI’S DEMONS or from playing Peter Quill’s mother in this or that GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY movie — or maybe from DOWNTON ABBEY, who can say?

Niels Bohr

(Judges, what say ye?)

I don’t know Danish, but in German “bohren” means “to drill” and a “Bohrer” is the tool you use to drill a hole. So most probably not animal related.

But are we okay with Piper Laurie?

Not the name; do we think she was a pretty terrific actress?

What kind of animal is a niels or a bohr?

Even if it were an animal in German or Danish, it wouldn’t count. The OP did specify the English names of animals.

But the OP did kick things off with Jimmy Wales — which I took to be a mere soundalike that’s of course not spelled like “Whales” — which is, arguably, like unto “Boar.”

Oh, OK, it’ll go into the alternate spelling group. That is, if there isn’t a Boar in one of the groupings above it in the hierarchy.

As long as I’m here: Caldecott Chubb was a bigger deal in the 90s (producing HOFFA, with Jack Nicholson and Danny DeVito; producing EVE’S BAYOU, with Samuel L Jackson and Lynn Whitfield; producing THE CROW, with Brandon Lee and Ernie Hudson), but he’s been at work in Hollywood since: a Chris Rock movie here, a Richard Gere movie there, a Kurt Russell movie along the way…

Thank you Waldo Pepper!

I never thought I’d ever be saying that!

As for #3 of the OP, Daryl Dragon, husband of Toni Tennille.

Paleontologist Jerzy Dzik (“dzik” is Polish for “wild boar”).
