I have a question about what happens when there is a gap between the Home run wall and the wall of the stands. Say a 3 foot dead zone, and the ball is dropping right in the middle of it. Is the gap part of the field of play and therefore interference, or is it part of the stands and therefore a homerun.
They both seem to lose “right of way” when they reach over something. What when both of them do?
IANAU, but the way I would read it is that the only wall that counts is the one defining the playing field, i.e., the home run wall. The separate retaining wall holding back the patrons is merely a device to keep them from reaching out onto the field, or a later addition to make the park smaller. If a ball is hit into the “gap” (over the playing field wall, but short of the retaining wall) that should be the same as if it were in the stands and there would be no fan interference.
