Fan Mail

Have any of you written fan mail to a celebrity and not just received a response, but one that was personally from the celeb.

I know it might be tough to tell sometimes, but I emailed an actor and he sent me a response that I’m sure was directly from him.

The actor was Steven Berkoff, maybe best known as Eddie Murphy’s nemesis Victor Maitland in “Beverly Hills Cop”. He and I share a last name (so now you know what the “B” stands for), and I mentioned to him how this first got my notice. (Also, my brother’s name is Stephan [pronounced the same as his name].) I then complimented him on his other works that I’ve seen, and asked him about his theatre work.

He wrote me back an email (that I sadly lost when my email server cleared out old messages). He mentioned where his family had originated from, the possible royalty of our family, and other things about our possible relation. He responded directly to questions I asked about him performing some of his work in the US (he’s British).

Up until a couple of years ago, a good friend of mine worked for a fan mail answering service. She answered the mail for two people over the years. One is an actor who was in a couple of awful TV shows that are still both hugely popular world wide the other is a commedian who’s done a string of popular movies and also wrote a hit song. (Email me your guesses, first one to correctly identify both people wins a $10 prize, one entry per person).

My friend skimmed the letters and divided them into two piles: 1. Regular fans who were sent a post card with a picture of the person to whom they wrote and 2. Psychos whose letters were forwarded to the appropriate authorities.
The psycho letters were something to read. Real tin foil hat stuff. Glad I’m not famous.

My SO got one once (well he regularly gets them but you know what I mean) which said “You are the best writer I’ve met. Actually you’re the only writer I’ve ever met”.

We had a stalker once which was really, really irritating. Little girl who used to ring long distance and then hang up. She stopped, I suspect after her parents got the phone bill.

I’ve emailed a couple of authors and got personal replies. That’s pretty funky.
