Somehow this seems like a proper serving of poetic justice to man overly full of himself. The Academy speaks.
The Passion of the Christ was essentially panned.
It is up for three technical awards: cinematography, makeup and original score.
And yet, had it been nominated for Best Picture, I’m guessing you would have dismissed it as just more evidence of an ultra-liberal Hollywood out of touch with regular Americans just like you.
It should sweep the board at the alternative Oscars.
Yeah, this non-nomination was win-win for the Far Right, they can whine about whatever the Academy did, or didn’t do.
Why are people trying to pit TPOTC and F9/11 against eachother? Michael Moore is not anti-Christian; Jesus isn’t a Republican. They got nothing to do with each other.
As for F9/11 not getting nominations; well, why should it? Its only chance was as Best Documentary, and Moore removed it from consideration in that category. Some folks have suggested that he did so because he had grandiose dreams of getting a Best Picture nom, but that’s just GOP hate speaking. In interviews, Moore did so because he wanted to be sure that people wouldn’t accuse of him of grandstanding to get an Oscar–in some folks’ eyes, nothing he does can escape calumny. I didn’t think it was particularly Oscar-worthy in any category, mostly because it was badly written and not serious enough.
TPOTC should win for Best Cinematography because it was beautifully shot, but otherwise it was a nasty slice of anti-Jewish hate propaganda.
Incidentally, Moore and Gibson have appeared together: and praised each other’s films very highly.
Every year there are pictures nominated, pictures that receive awards, and pictures panned, and because the decision of the Academy doesn’t agree with my own choices, its no skin off my nads.
Research my posts on SDMB for one instance of my claiming that Hollywood was ultra-liberal. I won’t wait up for you. Rolleyes, yourself.
I don’t believe for an instant that “The Passion of the Christ” was “anti-Jewish hate propaganda” and I can’t begin to imagine what logical argument could possibly be constructed to support such a claim.
But gobear is right on one thing; pretending these two films are somehow in opposition to one another is like pretending there’s some unseen conflict between “The Incredibles” and “Closer.” It just a total logical disconnect. The reason “Fahrenheit 9/11” wasn’t nominated for any Oscars is that it didn’t deserve to be; it was a fine documentary but wasn’t up for that award and wouldn’t deserve to be nominated for anything else. “The Passion” was nominated for a few awards it deserved to be nominated for and wasn’t nominated for the ones it didn’t deserve. There’s no mystery here and nothing to crow or complain about.
Damn, you sound bitter danceswithcats.
Perhaps these quotes’ll cheer you up:
Its always good to offer to cheer another, Squink. In Lubbock, they call that a mitzvah.
I’m moved by your generous concern for dances happiness. I’m going to do my bit to help as well, I’ll see if I can find that video on the internet of Micheal Moore rolling around on a pile of $100 bills with a trio of nympho supermodels…
Now THAT I’d bet the academy would give an award to.
Didn’t Michael Moore remove his movie from Oscar consideration like several months ago?
I think the OP is really desperate for a way to feel good about himself.
Only for the Best Documentary category, it was still eligible for the other awards.
OK, well, Best Picture was a long shot anyway. Documentaries seldom if ever get nominated in this category. It’s hardly signifies some sort of political triumph for Bushies.
Isn’t it interesting that I link an article published today, yet because I’ve said something against your revered Michael Moore, rather than confining your comments to the OP, it’s easier to attack the poster. You guys are fucking pathetic.
Have you seen The House of Flying Daggers? It’s one of the most visually amazing pictures I’ve ever seen.
The Very Long Engagement should fucking sweep all these crappy american films. That movie was the sort of absolutely wonderful, non-piece of shit movie that American cinema seems nearly incapable of producing. Though Million Dollar Baby actually is pretty good too.
That’s pretty ironic, coming from somebody opening a thread revelling in a movie not being nominated for awards.
Oh, and here’s one of him and George Soros spitting on returning heroes…
Try and dig it, dances. Moore ain’t in no wise “revered” amongst my ilk. (“Got Ilk?”) I think it is very healthy that such a strongly dissenting voice has such mass popularity, but I’m not much enamored of the man. Read one of his books, and he bored me comatose in about five pages. And, like a lot of folks, I suspect his humility is fraudulent, kind of like GeeDubya clearing brush on the ranch, been in his family for months, know what I mean?
So, OK, but who cares. But damn does he piss you guys off! Which is simply no end of entertainment! When you boil it down, he’s not saying anything that much different from what the Daily Show says, but none of you want to tear out Jon Stewart’s throat with your teeth!
So I gotta figure he must be doing something right, even though exactly what escapes me.
