You are so right. This disgusting trend of naming stadiums, parks and arenas after corporations has gone too far. They should have names that signify that they belong to the people or the community, or pay tribute to someone great. It is as if PNC is going to be so gracious to allow us peons the privilage of hanging out in their stadium for a few hours. I hope companies start to realize that not all publicity is good publicity.
Well, I hear the Steelers stadium is going to be named after Rooney…oh well.
I’m sorry, I STILL think it’s a waste of money. I mean, if they REALLY wanted something, they could’ve updated 3 Rivers and made a new park for the Pirates.
We have SO much else we could use in the city…try better ROADS, schools, etc…yet they give the rich a new playground.
They’re turning the stadium into a…sob…parking lot!!!
*I’ve never been there, but my dad took my sister and her friends to the last CONCERT there…N’SYNC. One of the guys is from Pittsburgh.
Besides, now the view from Mt Washington won’t be as beautiful…with the Stadium there, and the fountain at the Point…sigh
But Guin, one has to admit that, despite its unnecesarity, PNC park is going to be positively beautiful. Rooney stadium, as well. I assure you that Mt. Washingon’s view will still be just as good…just different.
What I’m worried about is the <choke, sob> implosion of 3RS. The new stadium’s all-glass side is literally 60 ft. away from the outside wall of Three-Rivers, with the glass already installed. How they’re gonna keep THAT from turning disaster is just one of the mysteries of Pittsburgh.
Well, it’s Pittsburgh-when do they EVER make sense, Jester?
sobs in the corner hugging a Terrible Towel
<pats Guin on shoulder, consolingly, and assumes fatherly figure pose>
There there, get it all out, Guin. It’s just better to let it all out of your system. Hey, how bout we go get an Ihron City, and reminisce about the Steel Curtain, kay?
Three Rivers is scheduled for implosion on February 18. My SO works for US Airways, so we’re planning to make it to Pittsburgh then. Hope to get a choice viewing spot somewhere on Mt. Washington (maybe at the Duquesne Incline). Wonder if we’ll have to camp out for that?
Hey, Guin! We were in da 'burgh this weekend and watched the game over lunch at the Primanti’s in Robinson, where I had a kolbassi with egg. Then had some Eggnog ice cream at the Bruster’s down the road. Ate dinner at the Eat 'n Park in Moon, where I had a grilled sticky ala mode.
Oh, and Jester. We had a bucket o’ wings at the Quaker Steak in North Fayette also.
God, I love going to Pittsburgh to eat!
Yinz jaggoffs is makin me homesick n’at.
Are you sure the glass is already installed? I was there for the Pitt-WVU game and got a good look at the new stadium and do not remember seeing any glass. Or do you mean that it will be installed at the time of implosion. You can buy $10.00 chances to press the implosion button.
I know 3 people who were at the Raider game. Lucky bastards.
Guinastasia: They re-neamed the 6th street bridge the “Clemente Bridge” to appease the Clemente crowd (myself included). They simply had to sell the naming rights (economics). The Buc’s need as much financial help as they can get. It seems though, at this moment, that the Steelers will not bend to that temptation.
Whammo: don’t forget the 'h in Pittsburgh. You might upset some folks . . .
As for the economics of building new stadiums with tax-payer money: Look at what Camden Yards has done for downtown Baltimore. They built 3 Rivers 30 years ago promising development. Where is this development? There is NOTHING to do after or before the game. NOTHING (ok, you can walk to the Strip). The Northside is a dump. I said it. Hopefully the promise of development will come through and Pittsburgh will be an even better place to visit.
The extra money from the luxury boxes alone will be fund some schools.
ahem, “will be funding some schools”
On an aside, any of yinz see Fox 53’s coverage of the ceremonies after the Steeler game? They started breaking for commercial DURING the introductions of the Steelers from the 70’s, the only thing anybody wanted to watch.
Jerks.
LaterComer-
I believe that it will be installed by the time of the implosion. Sorry to not have been clearer.
Oh, yes, you now know 4 people who were at the Raiders game.
Kepi-
Sure, you can get QS&L elsewhere, but it’s not the same unless it’s at Headwaters. Those huge screens, Myron’s voice blasting over the loudspeakers…<sob>
I think that the (hopefully) upcoming PittDopeDest is gonna have to be a combination Three Rivers memorial.
Pittsburgh Dopefest is going to kick some serious arse.
Eat that, Filthadelphia!
Yeah, dem stillers play good, yinz know at?
Yeah, you kids have fun. The better half of PA will be too busy getting ready for the playoffs.
So when’s the Dopefest?
(Jester, why didn’t you tell me?!)
Spinnie, I didn’t tell you mainly because there isn’t a date, place, or anything resembling organization involved in the PittDope. It’s all speculative, but we plan on forcing plans into submission, until they shout “Uncle!” and come together well enough to get lots of people.
First of all, don’t call me Spinnie. If you need an easier nickname, use goat boy (put my name into the Babelfish).
Second, may I suggest the O, sometime in February?
