Farewell to Pine Valley - All My Children ends

I don’t think there’s a thread for this. I don’t believe I’m the only person here who will admit to watching “All My Children”. they didn’t tie up many loose ends - I heard rumors it’s continuing on internet or cable somehow. Anyway, there was one cool bit where a guy essentially played Rhett to Erica Kane’s Scarlett - using the “I don’t give a damn” line. Loved it, mostly cause I called it at the being of the hour.

anyone else sad to see this show leave the air? however bad it might have been, I’m sure it had more entertainment value than it’s replacement “The Chew” - that’s it’s actual title. seriously. and they give you great tips like you can use dish towels as barbecue napkins. wooo. Pine Valley, you’ll be missed.

I was mainly a “One Life to Live” fan, but occasionally watched AMC. I haven’t watched either show on a regular basis in about 15 years, but I admit it - I did tune in today.

Opal mentioned in passing that Palmer is dead. When did that happen? And where was Myrtle - or is she dead as well? I know Ruth Warrick is dead, and I imagine they had Phoebe die as well.

I loved the flashback clip showing the various births over the years - especially the clip from the early 70s showing Joe (I think that’s who it was) telling another character that he was a father. The new father had a big smile on his face and showed off a mouthful of crooked, yellowed teeth. Oh how 70s that was!

I’ve only had soaps on in the background if I was at home doing other things, I won’t be too sad to see them go. Although I wish General Hospital had been the first to go, kind of sad for me to say because it was the first soap I really watched.

Sometimes I’d miss episodes for a few days and nothing had happened, people are still having the same conversation, people are still almost finding out the big secret but not quite, people are still having flashbacks to something that just happened the day before. Then other times I miss a few days and 10,000 things happen that they never flash back to or expound on again. The pacing on soaps was ridiculous.

At least the cancellation made AMC speed things up and resolve some things and give up on some other stupid storylines or uninteresting characters. Can’t say quite the same for OLTL yet since we still have a lot of useless characters and stories and other things getting dragged out endlessly.

As for the AMC ending. I hate what they did to J.R. I’ve always hated it. I hated how they screwed his character over to redeem a cheating, babysnatching, selfish bitch and tried to make us love her. This ending just guaranteed that I will have no interest in seeking out the show online.

My mother is a big AMC fan…she was not happy with the J.R.ending, and she was absolutely disgusted with the Jack/Erica resolution. She mentioned that she really did like the scene where Angie and a bunch of the cast members were present, and Angie gave a nice little speech.

Did anyone watch The View? Apparently they did a tribute episode yesterday.

I have not watched it in many, many years, but in the early 80’s I was totally hooked. I cried when Jenny died when her jet ski was blown up. I adored Tad. Laughed my ass off when Bo and the Vegas showgirl-can’t remember her name- went to see Rocky Horror. Asa, Clint, Pheobe, Vikki, Erica… they were all like family & friends to me. I treasure the memories.

Have never watched an episode, but happened to turn on the final episode yesterday - well, the last half hour.
I did laugh when apparently a “blind” person could now see. How typical of soap operas to just sort of fix things at the last minute. The dead arise, the blind can see and life goes on.
The rip-off from Gone With The Wind was really lame, but having never seen the show, perhaps this had some special wonderful significance that I am unaware of.

The end of soaps is sort of sad. These were a staple of American TV for so many years - people remember sitting with grandmothers (and great-grandmothers) and watching, or remember those college days laughing at them with friends. It can be that last little vestige of youth, and when they end it closes a chapter in your life. So to all the fans, my sympathies - the era has passed.

If they were going to keep one soap I would rather have seen some sort of mash-up of all three soaps. After all, the way these people travel at the speed of light they could easily travel back and forth between Pine Valley, NY; Port Charles, NY and Llanview, PA on a daily basis. Maybe they could get a Bullet train?

I was a soap fan circa Nina/Cliff & Jenny/Greg on AMC.

All my adult life I’ve made jokes about the missing Martin son - allegedly one of Ruth & Joe’s sons went up into the attic at some point to bring down skis…and just never came down again, and was never mentioned again.

Is this true? Or have I been contributing to urban legend hell all these years?

UT

It’s true, as far as I know. That would have been the perfect ending, to have him come down the stairs carrying skis. My brother even watched to see if they’d do that, but apparently not.
