Fargo: "He's fleeing the interview!"

Movie related legal question, so I ask here. If no other charges were brought against Jerry, what consequences, if any, could he have faced for having fled the interview with Marge?

We’ve discussed this before, and none whatsoever. He was not in custody or under arrest. He was free to stop answering questions whenever he wanted, or ask her to leave. Leaving on his own, even under false pretenses, wouldn’t be a crime.

It’s decision-time for the LEO at that point. If he/she has probable cause, and thinks it the best course, they could catch and arrest the interview fleer (fleeperson?).

The behavior does raise reasonable suspicion, which would allow the LEO to temporarily detain the person, but a decision would have to be made reasonably quickly to release or charge.

Sure his behavior was suspicious and could lead her to detain him further, but that’s not what the OP was about. If she had reasonably decided to arrest Jerry, but after further investigation it turned out in the end he had nothing to do with the kidnapping, or at least nothing they could go to a DA with, the mere fact he had fled the interview wouldn’t be something they could charge as a crime.

He wasn’t a suspect till he fled. She had reason now to suspect him but no probable cause to arrest him. For all she knew, he just got a call about an emergency with his son.
