Did you ever see True Romance (1993)? It stared Dennis Hopper, Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette and was amazingly violent. Quentin Tarantino directed. They did a 10 minute death scene surrounding the meaning of Eggplant.
Apparently, the only people who hate being called that name more than black people are Scilians and they **REALLY **hate it.
Did anyone else catch that the woman Betsy didn’t want Lou to marry was a Knutsen? The Knutsens were Bunny Lebowski’s family in the Big Lebowski. There was a deputy named Knutsen in season 1.
From memory Lou was pressurising Ed & Peggy from two directions. Firstly, the legal pressure and secondly the "whole lotta gang-related hurt is coming your way " angle. Lou was hoping if one tactic didn’t work the other would.
The overhead shots of the cars driving down the roads are a little weird to me. They look like the cars are driving through an entirely iced-over countryside but that’s not what we’re seeing on the ground.
And I was surprised that Betsy went solo to her father’s house; why didn’t Karl go with her? And I love Nick Offerman in this. I hope he’s in every season of the show.
I fully believe that Lou was just trying to save their lives, and end the gang war. He thought that if it had come out in the papers early on how Rye was really killed, most of the violence could have been avoided. It would have happened anyway, but he didn’t know that.
My one nit picky criticism of the show is that it seems like Lou is the only trooper in the state, kind of a lot of murders for one trooper, one sheriff and one shit cop to be dealing with.
OK. I’m assuming from your post that you think Lou is a decent fellow and is genuinely trying to help Ed & Peggy.
But given that assumption, IMHO, there’s one or two things that just don’t fit…
When Lou is taking Ed to the jail cell and Ed tries to say something nice about Lou’s wife, Lou snarls at him and tells him to “Shut up”. I would think a clever cop would view that as an opening and thank Ed for his kind words and then try to play the part of the “Good Cop” in order to get Ed to talk and give Lou the info he needs. What good does it do telling Ed to “Shut UP!”? I don’t think that is the sign of a very clever cop and I don’t think it fits with his “genuinely” trying to help Ed.
There is only the two of them present. So what possible good does it do act hostile towards Ed? Do you think that fits in with Lou genuinely trying to help Ed? IMO, that just doesn’t fit. I just think it’s a foolish way to conduct police business.
I’m willing to grant Lou a pass on that one, given that he’s dealing with the idea that he’s going to lose his wife to cancer. In general, they’ve portrayed Lou as an upstanding guy and a very good cop.
And that Lou thinks Ed is trying to play him by bringing up Lou’s wife. Lou had already given Ed the chance to confess and Ed was non co-operative. Nothing in this series suggests to meet Lou is anything other than a decent guy and good at his job. Considering some of the dumb stuff we see on Fargo(and other tv drama) Lou is Einstein.
I want to tell you that I agree that Lou is portrayed as a decent guy and a good cop. And I understand he’s having a terrible time with his wife about to die.
It seems like he really is off his game. I can understand that his mind is not fully engaged with these criminals. But now I’m no longer certain just what the point is I’m tying to make.
Lou certainly is a much better cop than that “shit cop” and if I was ever in trouble and needed a cop, I would hope that someone like Lou would be the one who answered my call. An “alien cop” would prob be too much for me to handle.
While interrogating Floyd, Hank mentioned visiting his sister in Brainerd. Could that be the reference to the movie? I thought it would be a nice tie-in if Hank (and therefore also Molly) were somehow related to Marge Gunderson.
