I would call it peak self-indulgent baloney (the trip to California, the animated robot story, a mysterious vomiting villain with a silly plan, gratuitous cameo by the deaf guy from Season 1, Ray Wise hanging out in a bar telling cryptic stories, etc.).
If he had used his regular voice, I think I would have loved his performance. But his accent was so phony that I found it incredibly distracting every time he opened his mouth. He might as well have been doing a terrible Ed Sullivan impression (as far as I was concerned).
I’m with you. Season 1 remains my favorite, partly for Martin Freeman and the other half for Allison Tolman.
How did you make it through the original film? Exaggerated, phony accents are kinda Fargo’s thing.
I found most of the accents pretty similar to the actor’s real voice in the film, whereas Martin Freeman’s was on a par with Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins. YMMV, I guess.
What are you talking about? His performance as the elder Mr. Dawes was amazing!
