Really? I mean, Lexx is OK, but I hardly think Farscape and that show are all that connected. They were on at the same time, but Lexx is more “sex jokes” stuff than anything to be taken seriously.
Dark Matter
Killjoys
The Librarians
Continuum
Lost Girl
Psych
12 Monkeys
Orphan Black
Defiance
Stargate SG1 (et al)
Both have a ship that is alive.
Both have token hot girls.
Scorpius is obviously into BDSM
And lexx is a former sex slave.
Lexx is an excellent suggestion.
Alias had its good points too, as long as you were ok with the idea that international cities always build their nightclubs on top of secret bases, and Jennifer Garner thus needs to wear a different wig and short dress to infiltrate them.
Also Fringe (and Lost, but don’t touch that if you can help it) related, is The Leftovers. It made up for Lost for me.
I came here to recommend Dark Matter (I just started season 2 on Netflix)
How about the new Battlestar Galactica? The first seasons are great (the ending not so much)
Season 2-4 of B5 were great, 5 was only so-so (they weren’t sure it was going to be renewed so they ended the main plot in season 4)
Brian
Second. It’s an amazing show. She’s amazing.
I’m not sure what you mean by this, but in my opinion, Babylon 5 is better than Farscape and BSG, and as good as Firefly.
Planetes is good, but more “hard” sci-fi than space opera, so perhaps not up your alley.
Similar shows, but he has seen Stargate and my opinion is that the rest do not meet his requirement of being at the same quality level.
12 Monkeys and Orphan Black are the only two on your list that come close, I think.
He wasn’t looking for just similar shows, he was looking for shows of the same quality.
I prefer the other shows, but B5 is almost as good. You should really listen to us and watch it!
Cowboy Bebop has 26 episodes plus a feature length OVA movie set between eps. 22 and 23; but it’s not necessary to see the movie to “complete” the series.
It’s more than what you got out of Firefly.
Flip that for me. BSG and Farscape are almost as good as Babylon 5.
Third (or more) on “The Expanse”.
Starts out a little rough–but most of the characters end up interacting before it is over with, in interesting ways.
It all comes together.
Not Sci-fi, and there are no space ships, but “Crazyhead” on Netflix is also very good, if you can get into teen women hunting demons.
This show also has the only watchable, funny, “someone intentionally pissing on someone else” scene that I have ever, well, seen.
And a terrific cold open.
I also would highly recommend The Expanse; I read all the books after watching the first 4 episodes.
Also, Dark Matter
The 100 if you want a little more teen drama, I still think it’s worth watching.
Black Mirror if you have Netflix.
Babylon 5
The Orville.
I loved Farscape, Battlestar Galactica (old and new), and FireflFWIW.
If the OP is also reading and likes spaceships, we have to recommend the OG of Space Opera: E. E. Smith. Start with Triplanetary, then on to First Lensman and Galactic Patrol. Wrap it all up with Grey Lensman, Second Stage Lensmen and finally Children of the Lens.
Kimball Kinneson rocks!
Really? Says you. They are all more than equal to Farscape.
Agreed; Stargate/SG-1 had a quirky wit to it as well, even if the setting was overall much more mainstream than the fish-out-of-water story of John Chrichton/Farscape.
Personally, I liked Farscape better simply because it deliciously skewered and averted/inverted/subverted so many common sci-fi tropes.
As John himself says to Jool:
I’ve avoided Babylon 5 because I’m not a fan of Bruce Boxleitner…don’t know why. Might also be that I first heard of the show when I had already fallen in love with Farscape and wasn’t willing to share those feelings with another show. Also, I’m pretty sure I’ve heard it wasn’t very good. I don’t know if I’m willing to be proven wrong yet. Same goes for Lexx.
I’ve watched Orphan Black. I enjoyed the first couple seasons, but it became too convoluted and confusing, and I stopped enjoying it. So i stopped watching.
There have been so many recommendations! I think I’ll start with Dark Matter and the Orville. And I’ll start reading the Expanse.
Have you read Lois McMaster Bujold’s Vorkosigan books? Very best kind of space opera.
Right, I Like Stargate, too. Didn’t OP state he’d already seen it?
Surprised no one else has mentioned Blake’s 7 yet.
Watched them all. More than once. I’m good.
Also, I’m female.
