Farscape, Firefly, Battlestar Galactica

Watched it. Loved it. Loved the scene with the pool and the Johnny Cash song. One of my favourite scenes in any tv show.

They do…off a cliff downhill. But until then the series is quite entertaining.

I think the later seasons of Andromeda were arguably downhill, but I think a more precise direction is they went sideways or into a non Euclidean direction.
(so many dream/hallucination/insane episodes…)

Re: B5

If you watch Season 1, you might want to watch Season 2.
Once you’ve watched Season 2, you will want to watch Season 3.
Once you’ve watched Season 3, you would threaten severe physical harm to anyone who tried to prevent you from watching Season 4.
Once you’ve watched Season 4, you might as well watch Season 5.

(Please note. The last episode of Season 5 is the series finale and must be seen. But if you’re going to watch the series you owe it to yourself to sit through even the “stinkers”. To do otherwise is like skipping a chapter in a novel because that chapter drags a bit.)

If you’re going to watch B5 then you may as well watch the spin-off, Crusade. I enjoyed it and wished it had more seasons.

I’m going out on a limb and recommend a couple anime series.
Space Pirate Captain Harlock. Harlock isn’t just Earths only hope, he’s also a space pirate. How can you not love that.
And, Robotech(the name by which I first got to know it.) It is also about a battle fortress single handily fighting off an alien armada.

Isn’t Lexx the name of the giant moth starship? I mean, if that’s what turns you on, who am I to judge?

I liked Andromeda but it tesseracted. I missed a few episodes of the last season and couldn’t figure out what was going on. I mean to watch it again but don’t really expect it to make much more sense.

My daughter is the only reason i’ve watched anything animated. She will hound me until i commit, and then continue to hound me until i’ve watched it all. I never would have watched Archer, Bojack Horseman or Bigmouth by choice. And let me tell you, when she wants me to watch or read something, it’s not a choice. Bet ya can’t guess what happens when i suggest something to her.

Holy shit. I’m not 5 minutes into watching The Expanse and I’m already annoyed that its not like the book. Please tell me it pulls itself together!

I didn’t read the books. LOVE the show.

I suggest you try to enjoy it for what it is, much like I do with Star Trek: Discovery. It can be hard, I understand, having that universe already in your head. Take it on its own merits and not on what says it is.

Presuming facts not in evidence. IMO Crusade sucked pak’ma’ra balls.

On the urban fantasy side, have you done Dresden Files? I would highly recommend if you haven’t. The first two books Butcher’s still ramping up but the third one on are amazing, funny, sad…it’s all in there.

I’m with you on this one - Crusade was a hot mess. I mean, the whole thing was basically “You need to find the cure for the plague that will kill everyone on Earth in five years! This is the only ship that can do it! Billions of lives depend on you! And if on the way you could also sort out a mining colony dispute, do security detail for a conference on Mars and deal with your Technomage’s unresolved lovelife issues, that’d be great.”

The notable exception was the episode parodying The X-Files (“Visitors From Down The Street”) which was pretty clever. I’d watch that one again.

Most of the B5 TV movies are skippable as well.

In what way is it not like the book? I mean, there are some plot differences, stuff moved around in time as well (no spoilers there), but otherwise the main story tracks the books quite closely, so far (I’m only halfway through season 2).

Or are you talking about look&feel? Because I think it does a great job there.

Or perhaps you’re talking about the casting? That’s entirely subjective, I guess, but they all work very well for me - except fan favourite Shohreh Aghdashloo, she still doesn’t really work for me.

Except for the one about the Earth-Mimbari war… I think it was called “In The Beginning”? That one was pretty good, and the framing story for it was great.

They compress some events together and modify some of the other stuff but it does follow the basic arc of the books. It does get better, promise. FWIW, I think the casting is fantastic and I have trouble picturing anyone else in the roles now, especially Aveserala. I hear here voice now when I’m reading the books. Also, Book 7 is out (Persopolis Rising) and I read it in two days over Christmas. Now I have to wait a year until the next one! :frowning:

Yes, that one and “The Gathering” (the B5 pilot) are highly recommended, and I thought “Lost Tales” was likable enough albeit not required viewing. But “Thirdspace”, “The River of Souls”, “A Call to Arms” (which launched the “Crusade” spinoff), and “Legends of the Rangers” can all be safely ignored.

Ok fair enough. I stopped watching and started the second book instead, but I’ll go back and give it a try.

Now that ive watched a few episodes i know what i dont like about it. The writers have created conflict and tension that doesn’t exist in the book. There’s nothing wrong with the book so why change it? Why must tv shows be so angsty??

It’s the show that Firefly hoped to grow up to be, one day.

I’ll throw in Death Note and The Big O.

If you’re up for something that can keep up with your ADHD, also try out Excel Saga.

The Firefly always reminded me of the Outlaw Star. The ships, but both series also had similarities.
