Okay, I’m going to a job interview tonight. I need a bit of help with my wardrobe. It’s around 90+ degrees today and I am waffling a bit on what to wear. Traditional knowledge says women shouldn’t wear pants to an interview, but thanks to my demon dog, I seem to be lacking in the “sensible heels” department. What I have in the way of shoes are, black nuaga-suede short granny boots, suitable to wear with my gray and black striped trousers, with a grey print blouse. Nice outfit, flatters my figure but doesn’t look as though I was trying all that hard to call attention to my shape. I also have a pair of 3" heels, sligback style but with small square rhinestone bucks at the ankle. These would work with either of my heavier dress jacket combos (one is charcoal, the other is cabernet). I also have a pair of open toed 4" chunky heels with open toes. I could wear these with a light silky skirt(black with a rose pattern) and sweater. The only hose I have are nude…
What should I wear to A)look fashionable and B)not wind up a ball of sweaty flesh once I get there?
I am comfortable in any of these outfits, though I am leaning away from the dress jacket combos, as they are rather warm. Is the traditional knowledge of women/pants=bad at an interview still true? Help…
I guess it depends on what kind of job you’re interviewing for . . . Is it too late to go shopping? I always find in this weather, a simple cotton skirt & sweater, dressed up with pearls or a nice pin, is both chic and comfortable. It can be worn with or without stockings, and with heels or flats.
Is the interview in an office building, preferably on the 2nd floor or higher? If so, bring the outfit and put it on in the 1st floor bathroom. Put your other clothes in a briefcase and then DO NOT OPEN the briefcase during your interview.
Or, wear a camisole with slacks or skirt. Bring a blazer to throw on once you get there. Don’t wear hose unless you’re wearing a skirt.
Also, I am of the opinion that as long as you look presentable, who the heck cares if you’re wearing a skirt or pants? What type of job are you interviewing for? You don’t want to work for a bunch of stuffed shirts who insist you need to wear hose and be hot as hell on a super hot day, do you?
Wow. I’d never hear that before. I just graduated college in '98, and since then I have exclusively worn pants to my job interviews and (knock on wood) have gotten offers for every position I interviewed for, including my last one. I just started here 3 months ago, and it’s a fairly conservative, and truly giant, company. I wore my “power suit” – black pants and blazer with a white shirt, although I think a royal blue shirt looks good, too. I think as long as you look well-kempt and dressed with some thought, you’ll be just fine. They’re much more interested in what you have to say.
As far as shoes with the outfit go (and from what you’ve described, you’ll feel more confident and comfortable in the pants outfit), the black granny boots will be fine. Even in summer, it’s only appropriate to wear close-toed, close-heeled shoes to an interview.
Best of luck, Tequila! I’m sure you’ll kick ass.
I say go with the pants. Sure, a dress/skirt is preferable but do I think it’ll make or break the interview. No way. Your black pant combo sounds more than appropriate.
Good luck!!
Just wanted to thank each of you for responding.
I went with the pant and blouse combo. I thought it was the most “polished” yet locally fashionable look of my choices. I am just not used to midwest fashion. All the input was much appreciated.
By the way the job offer is a wine consultant.
Wow! Cool!
Keep us posted.
