Fashion question... shoe color?

Let me be the first to roll my eyes at this:

Tommy-Two-Ties is going to buy a suit that is either tan or khaki- colored, and now he’s obsessing about what color shoes to wear with it…

Again:

He asked me (like I know! When you wear size 16 shoes, you don’t get to choose what color they are! When I go shoe shopping, I poke my head in the store, say “You got anything in size 16?” Usually they say, “No! Are you kidding!” And I move on… if they answer “Yes.” I say, “I’ll take 'em!!”)

So, fasionable ones: what color shoes should TTT wear with his tan or khaki suit?

Anyone?

Oy! Many mispellings! The title should have been “Fashion question”!

Now I have to roll my eyes at myself!

I would definitely go with black. Brown is only good if you have a nice-ass light brown, tan, or khaki suit. If your suit is English-y in style, go with the brown, but if you are trying to go for a modern-y type of german look with the suit, definitely go with the black.

Plus, the black is more versitile. Are you getting wing tips or oxfords? Square toes? If you are dressing for success and want to look “Wall Street”, definitely get something with a tassle. But if your trying to look hip, a little funky, you might want to go with the square toe. But don’t get me wrong, a square toe can be sophisticated as well.

I bought a black pair of mild square toes last Christmas. Theyre perfet with a classy suit, but I can go funky with them too. And if I’m on an airplane in 1st, I can just wear a pair of nice jeans, a sweater and the shoes.

Black, whatever you do, black.

So I’m reading through the threads, and I see that Astroboy has started a thread and it has only one reply. There’s a conversation I can get in on early, I think. Then I discover that the reply came from…Astroboy! This is so sad, I think. Someone needs to speak up, but is it me? What the hell.

Since I am also acquainted with Tommy Two-Ties, I can say that he’ll look like a doofus no matter what he wears, so who cares. But to return to the question: Who cares?? Did he consider black? (I wear black shoes with everything, and I feel relatively well-dressed.) Or brown? What about burgundy? Or he could always fall back on tan shoes with pink shoelaces, a polka-dot vest and man-o-man. Add a big panama with a purple hat-band, and he’s got a song my mother used to sing.

Okay, previewing I see that someone else replied before me. Still, it seems kinda sad.

MrO, Tommy-Two-Ties is not amused!

Some people have NO sense of humor!

However, despite your and wishbone’s answers, TTT stubbornly and foolishly refuses to consider black shoes! I don’t know why!

Sheesh!

I see a dilemma…no black. There’s only one final suggestion that has not been made. White. And dressy…with little gold buckles. Think Pilgrims do spring! Remember the ones Clark Griswold recieved from cousin Eddie?

You…you…MEN!

Anything but black or white. Maybe not anything. not purple or polka-dotted or blue or something like that. Burgundy or brown. And no white socks!

[with a dramatic flourish]My work here is done. To bed with me.

I’m going to fix the spelling in the thread title and move this to the IMHO forum… Jill

I find that Chuck Taylor All-Stars come in a wide variety of colors. You can mix and match or just wear the black ones as they go with anything. You also get the choice of low tops or high tops, but all self respecting fashion types would tell you that high tops are the ONLY choice.

Well, if he won’t consider black shoes, I have think he should follow this procedure:

  1. He should purchase the suit.

  2. He should cut it into 2 cm squares.

  3. He should mail one square to each doper who participates in this thread.

  4. We will mail the squares back, with our votes for shoe color written on them (in indelible ink).

  5. He can tally them and go with majority opinion, or he can pick out the one from the person with the best handwriting. Whatever he wants.

  6. Getting the suit back together again is his responsibility.

OR he could just purchase a normal-colored suit.

With a tan suit (khaki isn’t the color, its the material) you can wear brown or cordovan. Tan suits are definitely for summer wear, and black shoes will look heavy.

Never wear loafers with a suit, and this includes tassel or kiltie loafers. With a suit you always wear a pair of lace-up shoes.

I have a tan suit that I wear with a pair of brown (they have a red cast to them - sort of a chestnut color)cap-toed oxfords. Combine it with a light blue shirt and dark tie and you’re ready for summer.

kha-ki… **2 : ** a light yellowis brown – khaki adj

So khaki is not only a type of cloth (“made usu. of cotton or wool”), but alos a colour.

“yellowish” and “also”

While MrO’s colorful suggestion has merit, I suggest nice rich brown or deep burgandy.

Astroboy, how did Mr. Two Ties survive before you came along?

I just had to come in and reply because I am the least qualified to answer any fashion questions, particularly shoe questions. I live barefoot, in sneakers or in sandals but my favorite pair of shoes is a pair of faux-suede bright purple 4" stacked heels, and a few weeks ago I fell in love with (but did not buy) a pair of black-and-red patent leather loafers. Mmmm…shiny…

So I say…go with bowling shoes. They go with anything, they’re right for any season, and small people can easily find you in a crowd. Er, him. Find him in a crowd. You see what I’m saying.

maybe now, but not originally

Well, I used to date a really natty dresser. I believe that with his seersucker suit he wore white bucks, and with his khaki suit he wore… SADDLE SHOES! Honestly. They weren’t the black-and-white ones, obviously. Some sort of suedish two-tone brown.

Granted we used to laugh at him mercilessly. He’d show up for softball practice with a cableknit brooks brothers sweater tied around his shoulders (he’d tie it around his waist to run the bases). Ahem. But he generally looked sharp.

HellifIknow, Arden! All I know is I came into the office this morning about 20 minutes late (got caught in traffic) and TTT is surfing the net instead of working! Glancing over his shoulder, I find that he is submitting a fashion question to the GQ Magazine(? maybe another fashion mag., I don’t recall…) site!

This engendered the round of questioning/arguments that spawned the OP in this thread…

In regards to MrO… while I like and respect said person; it should be known that MrO has been known to wear a very respectable charcoal-gray suit with open-toed sandals!! I’ve seen it! On many occassions! Agent of the Devil?? You decide!

In my defense, I have to correct Astroboy. I don’t wear the sandals with my charcoal-grey suit; it’s much too heavy for warm weather. Now, with a lightweight suit, yes, but I wear the sandals with socks in that case. Generally, the sandals don’t come out until I’ve discarded the jacket for the summer and switched to just a shirt and tie. And pants, usually.

Still, the key point here is the * color* of the sandals: black, of course.

Agent of the devil, indeed.

I’m thinking some nice, dark brown (think mahogany) brogues would be nice.

I dig a man in brogues.
