Fashionistas: Is "Diesel" Considered a Prestige Brand?

Diesel is a brand that sells casual clothing (blue jeans, shirts, sportswear, etc.).
They seem to be pricey, but not up there with luxury barnds (like DKNY, Gucci).
Are they considered an “almost” luxury brand?
And, are they worth the price?

I graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology about two years ago, and I don’t recall ever seeing anyone wearing Diesel or the brand being mentioned in any context (we did lots of in-class case studies on various companies and were frequently assigned research projects on brands and labels).

However, when I was 14 or so I bought two pairs of Diesel sneakers- one for gym class, one for every day wear. I finally tossed them when I was around 20. So definitely good quality. Have no idea about the rest of their products though.

ETA: I did a search for Diesel on Fashionista.com and found a NSFW picture of Terry Richardson, a photographer who was doing a shoot for them, exposing himself with a bunch of male underwear models.

There are also images from Diesel’s runway shows. Definitely not as high profile as Gucci though.

If I remember correctly, the term we used for brands that are “almost luxury” is “bridge.” Will double check that though.
