Fast Food Lawsuit over being fat.

In this article abcnews reports that

Is anyone else sick of these frivolous lawsuits? When will we stop being a society of victims and once again start taking responsibility for our own actions?

In our society the two things that we can be most proud of is our judicial system and our right to free speech. Unfortunately, I am ashamed of how we exercise both. (yes, the free speech thing is a tangent.)

Can anyone propose a system by which we can all have a fair chance of having our day in court, and yet would also end foolish lawsuits? I cannot, although I have given it some thought.

isn’t this show being helmed by the same guy that brought big tobacco to it’s knees?
i hear tell it’s more about freedom of choice and that in some states in middle america there is precious little of that. Mac D’s, for example, are franchised into school cafeterias. the big [how many] boys of soda pay schools so that they can place drinks vending machines outside classrooms…
i say good luck to them (the lawsuiters that is). fast-food is cheap, it’s tasty, it’s fat so it’s addictive. sure, people can stop themselves from eating it. sure, they can take a trip to the supermarket and get a nice slice of sirloin and some fresh vegetables… but not so sure they will, and not even sure they can.

This topic is already a large thread in GD. Might want to take it there.

Huh? Fat is addictive? People are unable to make a trip to the supermarket and make a meal? I don’t understand what you’re saying here.

All that I can think of (and this is admittedly weak) is creating some kind of lower court designed specifically lawsuits. It would be a screening system - before the lawsuit goes anywhere, it must first be subject to a panel of judges or what have you, that can determine if the case has merit. If it adheres to both common sense and legal standards, it can go forward. If not, squash it.
