Fat Blocking Drugs

The latest trend in dieting seems to be these drugs that block the absorption of fata. I understand that they have some rather unpleasant side effects (oily discharge). Well, I’ve got my own idea on this-alkalies will turn fats into soap (saponification). If you drink water that is alkaline enough, it will turn all the fat you ingest into soap, which is not digestible 9trust me). So to all you chemists-how alkaline must your water be to do this?

If your speaking of the drug xenical no one can afford it anyway…127.oo per one month prescription ( not covered by medical insurance by the way.)

Health is not a condition of matter, but of mind-

Alkaline enough to kill you before you get skinny.

Digestion is a complicated and delicate process that takes place in a highly acidic environment. The amazing thing about these drugs (besides their price) is that they can target one small portion of the chemistry without affecting the rest significantly. The list of side effects, although long, is a lot less than it is for alkalis. Before you could saponify any significant amount of fat you would disrupt your digestive process to the point of shutdown.

I know from watching old Western movies that alkaline water is poisonous. I don’t know if it’s from this digestive disruption or other effects.

Nice try, but you’re not going to get rich on this one.

If I had a coice between “Oily Discharge/Uncontrolable bowel movements” and a walk around the block to make me thinner…I’ll take a walk thanks

Well, I certainly wouldn’t reccomend doing both, Patricinus.

I don’t know where you got the idea that you can’t digest soap. Fats are glycerine esters of fatty acids. Saponified fats (soap) are salts of fatty acids. One of the first things your body DOES with fats is break them down into salts of fatty acids

The problem with blocking fat absorption, whether by using a “fake fat” like Olestra or by using some kind of fat blocking drug, is that it still has to go SOMEWHERE even if you can’t digest it, and there aren’t really that many options.
