Educate me, please. I never knew the term “Hottentot” was considered offensive. I just did a quick search of Google and I couldn’t find any indication that it was offensive. What have I missed out on?
This is probably the key thread from a discussion that went across at least two forums and multiple threads. (Search on “Hotrtentot” for the details.)
Summary: “Hottentot” is an English variant on a Dutch/Afrikaans epithet for the Khoikhoin people that is regarded as a strong insult by them. Nzinga Seated, a hevyset African-American woman (her weight is significant to the discussion) had originally used Venus Hottentot as a mark of tribute and solidarity to the 19th century Khoikhoin sideshow performer (who maintained her dignity despite having her megalohymen and steatopygous buttocks exposed for the titillation of paying customers. Mr Dibble, who is of Cape Coloured descent (and hence roughly half Khoikhoin), objected strongly to the “Hottentot” bit. Penis-waving ensued.
South African ethnic composition is an extremely complex minefield to negotiate. Suffice it to say that steatopygia in the strict seanse is a Khoisan ethnic identifier in the same way as epicanthic folds are an ethnic-Asian identifier. And the Khoisan are no more Negroid than you are Australoid (Australian aborigine) – they’re a relatively small primary racial stock with equal distinctness as Black, White, and Asian/Amerind, the three large primary ‘races’ insofar as modern ethnology accepts such things.
So then, you’re saying Opal has a fat ass?
As I recall the Playboy cartoonist that you may be recalling is “Sokol”
Not to muddle the broader point, which is right on, but it should be noted that epicanthic folds are a Khoisan ethnic identifier too.
