I remember Elevator Action, but there was another way to get to the top of a building–climb up the outside. I’m talking, of course, about “Crazy Climber.” The best part was when you heard him say “ouch!” when being hit in the head by a flowerpot, or “oh no!” as he fell. You had two joysticks, and you had to climb up the side of a building as people opened and closed windows, birds dropped things on you, etc. Man, that was a fun one.
If it is displayed via a video monitor or television set, it qualifies as a video game. Otherwise, it is a board game, or an outdoors game, or a card game, etc.
I can’t believe no one mentioned Metroid. Holy shit, that was the coolest game ever. I would play it and beat it, then play it all over again and again and again and again.
Then my mom said
“You’re too fat. I threw your Nintendo away. Go mow the lawn.”
She was just fuckin’ with me, though. She just hid it and when she gave it back a week later, she said that I could only have it back if I promised to limit my playing time. I had decided to take up YAFL (pee-wee football) anyway, and a few months later the thing was gathering dust in my closet anyway. I was 10.
Ahhh, memories. Metroid still kills people, though. I love that game.
