If you had to pick one as your favorite, which would it be?
I absolutely love The Trouble With Harry
It’s a long filmography, so I picked the 21 features that had the highest rankings on IMDB.
I went with “old reliable” ( i.e. Rear Window ), but like the Coen poll, there are other equally worthy contenders.
While I love the dialogue and tension of Psycho there’s just no beating North By Northwest for me at least. From the opeining credits playing over the frantic music and images of the NY city rat race of the 50s I get hooked every time.
North By Northwest for me too. It takes some kind of movie to beat out Rear Window and The Birds but NbN keeps me spellbound every time.
Jimmy Stewart+Grace Kelly > Cary Grant+Eve Marie Saint. Rear Window.
There is something about the film Rebecca that just haunts me, and makes me watch it again whenever I happen to come across it on TCM. It is a beautifully creepy film, with a nice couple of twists along the way.
Wow, I’m the only one who picked Psycho?
Yup, only on the Dope does Rope outnumber Psycho in votes.
I chose Rope. I’m not sure why. I was obsessed with it for a while in college and really got into that whole Leopold/Loeb thing.
The new Gus Van Sant version was better…
…just joking.
Psycho never really “scared” me as it seems to have scared others. Perhaps it was that by the time I had seen it, about a zillion people had spoiled the “big surprise” moment and it was almost a let down when I actually saw it.
I was very close to picking Rebecca, but was swayed toward Notorious because of the incomparable Claude Rains. Still, Judith Anderson . . .
I stand by Notorious. But I have bad posture.
How did you get more than 10 options?
I see they’ve removed the limit of 10. That’s good.
Oh, change my vote to To Catch A Thief
Tough call, but I’ll go with murder in the UN, hooking up with Eva Marie Saint on a train, getting chased by a biplane that crashes into a tanker, and crawling over the faces of giant dead presidents.
Who’s voting for “Rope”? That movie played out forever to no point. A real talk fest. Because it was based on real events, plus it was a gimmick where the goal was one long take. Big whoop. Would have been slow even as one of his half hour TV dramas.
Me.
I don’t know why, I just like the way it unfolds. And the way the tension mounts in a subtle but relentless way.
North by Northwest. It’s just one of those perfect films. Other Hitchcock faves of mine are Rope (seen it several times and I always find it gripping), Frenzy, The 39 Steps, The Lady Vanishes, maybe Vertigo and Strangers on a Train. The rest are a bit hit-and-miss, for me.
I feel the same way. Plus, gay subtext! High five, tdn. (High BUTT five.)
Tough call, but the nod goes to Strangers on a Train. Plus, gay subtext!
But no high five with butts?
