I’m a fan of his architectural designs—and his application of the theory of ruin value—and, on a personal level, he was head-and-shoulders above the level of most of the other fanatics in Berlin.
On the other hand, of course, he still worked for and with those freaks, and his hands are far from clean. Hence, I list him here.
Weezer. Their first two albums were fantastic, but they inspired every woe-is-me, no-one-loves-me, my-girlfriend-dumped-me, craptacular emo band in existence today. And I like Lou Barlow, but he’s guilty of to contributing to this mess as well.
Whitman. As is observed in Strunk and White, “‘Spontaneous me,’ sang Whitman, and, in his innocence, let loose the hordes of uninspired scribblers who would one day confuse spontaneity with genius.”
Bauhaus, the band that’s considered the original goth rock band. That should be pretty self-explanatory.
Green Day. Okay, they’re not one of my favorites and I don’t think they’re great, but they’re not that bad. But they inspired a wave of musical shit that hasn’t gone away.
Oh, another one would be Jim Morrison. His moody, poetic, overwrought style was perfect for him and the Doors’ music, but the vast majority of people who emulate his style simply don’t have what it takes to pull it off.
