Favorite Boogie Woogie Piano?

I submit for your approval:

Allman Brothers: Pony Boy
Little Feat: Old Folks Boogie
Steely Dan: Bodisativa

lay it on me…

OK, your favorite piano instrumental song?

Meade ‘Lux’ Lewis - Boogie Woogie
Albert Ammons - Boogie Woogie Dream

I’m more of a fan of stride piano, so guys like Willie ‘The Lion’ Smith and Luckey Roberts are who really turn my crank. Earl ‘Fatha’ Hines and Thelonious Sphere Monk deserve a mention for their solo piano albums, too. Look for the ‘Hines plays Ellington’ and a Columbia set ‘The Solo Piano of Monk’.

Closer to the style of the people you mentioned - how do you feel about Jerry Lee Lewis?

Bumble Boogie

Look no further than right here (link to website). Mosaic records - which is kinda like the Rhino reissue for jazz - has just released a 3-CD collection of amazing Blues and Boogie Woogie piano. I just got it for Father’s Day and LOVE it.

It has the stuff **the Ministre ** mentions and so much, much more. When you hear Disc 1, Track 10 - Pete Johnson’s Boogie Woogie, or Disc 3, Track 1 - Mary Lou Williams’ Little Joe from Chicago - you will be completely sucked in.

The best collection I have heard - it has great blues piano and some tracks feature Big Joe Turner on vocals - what more do you need to hear??

Limited edition run of 5000 copies - jump on it.

Louis Jordan, “Ain’t Nobody Here But Us Chickens”
Loggins & Messina, “Your Mama Don’t Dance”

Okay, thanks Guys! This is wonderful stuff!!

The Tubes’ Proud to be an American

Give a listen to Jelly Roll Morton’s Piano Rolls for some early Boogie Woogie with Ragtime influences. This is especially noticeable in “Original Jelly Roll Blues”.

Not instrumental, but if you like boogie woogie piano you really need to check out Commander Cody.. Particularly recommended are “Beat Me Daddy Eight to the Bar,” “Boogie Man Boogie,” “Rock that Boogie,” “House of Blue Lights,” “Four or Five Times.” If the only reason you know of Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen is “Hot Rod Lincoln,” you’re missing an amazingly versatile band. Jump blues, r & b, rockabilly, western swing and pure rock and roll await you, all anchored by George Frayne’s (the Commander’s real name) fabulous piano work.

Go to Youtube and search “rob rio”. Lots of good stuff.

Word Man: I ordered my copy! A big “Thank you” to Le Ministre too. I was reading some of the comments under the video, these were the guys who first made Boogie Woogie famous.
Walloon: Thanks for reminging me about Your Mama Don’t Dance, great song, I had that album years ago. I remember a song about a long tailed cat and a rocking chair too…
BlondeBear: Nice patriotic song, good stuff, but it was strange seeing Santa in the middle of the summer.
Lute Skywatcher: When I was listening to Jelly Roll Morton, it reminded me a lot of Scott Joplin and some of those strange old cartoons from the 1930s.
Labdad: Yes, I know Commander Cody & “Hot Rod Lincoln”, I love the song, I will definitly look into him next.
Valgard: I checked out Rob Rio, he’s good, he reminds me a lot of Jerry Lee Lewis.

Asleep at the Wheel does a mean boogie version of Route 66

Cool! Let me know what you think!

Give a listen to “Winter Wonderland” from the When Harry Met Sally soundtrack.
