One cable system I subscribed to a few years ago included a very addictive channel called SCOLA. The production values at SCOLA itself were very amateurish, perhaps on a small town public access station level, but the programming was something you’d never find anyplace else in the United States – news broadcasts from around the world, intended for that home market, without subtitles, and often with commercials!
The news from Iceland included some American commercials that were merely dubbed into Icelandic. Occasionally, the crew at SCOLA would forget to “switch channes” after the end of a newscast, so the Icelandic news would be followed by Beverly Hills 90210 – English, with Icelandic subtitles. Don’t get me started on “Good Morning Metro Manila.” where the hosts would switch between English, Spanish and Tagalog every few words. "Pa ting bang tong pa pa ding dong esta aqui de los grande weather forecast for today, with highs in the mid-30s, and humidity up around 85%.
I personally would live to see American cable systems include home market channels from other countries. Granted, border towns get Mexican or Canadian channels, but I’m thinking about channels from across the waves. BBC America? HA! I want the real thing – BBC 1 and 2, along with ITV and Channel 4. Aussie and South African stations would be interesting, too … and Japanese television would be downright surreal.
I can’t wait to get a TV so I can get cable.
My favorites are: A&E, Comedy Central (and the movies they show are lousy and the management needs to move away from the concept of “heavy rotation”; it works for MTV, but not for movies), Food Network (I stood in line last Thanksgiving for over three hours to have Emeril Lagasse sign a cookbook for my mom), TBN (which, where I live has a local affiliate so it’s not cable per se. But it is downright amusing to the point of belly laughter at times), and CNN Headline News.
Cartoon Network! BUM-bum-bum-BUM-bum-bum-BUM (Cartoon Cartoons!)
For bonus points (NYC Dopers disqualified), explain how my username relates to said channel…

A Canadian checking in…
Favourite cable channels:
Teletoon
Think “Cartoon Network with all kinds of funky NFB and art school stuff”.
Space: The Imagination Station.
Science fiction, great old movies, News from Space[sup]TM[/sup] and Thunderbirds!
Much less frequently watched:
CBC Newsworld.
Instead of CNN International, Canada gets the domestic-US version of CNN, which sucks rocks when it comes to non-US coverage: “world news” is “anything outside the borders of the USA that involves a US citizen somehow”. I was appalled at the provincialism of US news when I was there.
TLC
The US channel.
Discovery Channel
A Canadian version. My dad watches this a lot too.
APTN
All aboriginal, all the time. Local CBC news from Iqaluit is …interesting. And when they launched, they had a great series on the Hawaiian independence movement.
YTV
“Youth Television”. basically for teenagers. Has more cartoons.
The Cartoon Network
Nickelodeon
Animal Planet
Right now, the only cable channel we get that i will watch is Animal Planet. I have seen every episode of Breed All About It twice. I really need a job. sigh
Comedy Central. If only for The Daily Show. Watching this station for the movies is like reading Playboy for the articles. The Daily Show’s razor sharp writing and social commentary makes Comedy Central invaluable.
I can’t understand why this show hasn’t become more popular.
What? i love Comedy Central’s movies! Some of them, anyway. Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure rocks, as does Clue and Beetlejuice (when they show it), and the nerd movies aren’t so bad.
Comedy Central is good for shows, like That’s My Bush and Win Ben Stein’s Money…money…money.
VH1 is cool when they aren’t showing the forty best hair bands (Honest to god, they did that today), or Behind the Music/Where Are They Now? of losers.
SciFi- I’m fast becoming a fan.
Animal Planet. It’s like Box Full of Puppies- but a whole channel of it.
And the Bichon Frise Breed All About It is the cutest episode by far.
Space… The Imagination Station I love my Trek marathons, Angel, Sliders, Highlander, etc. Not to mention yummy Steve Anthony doing the 2001 Space Road Odyssey. Just the best station ever, really.
TLC The natural disaster stuff, Trauma - Life in the ER, and all that stuff.
Comedy Channel I like the stand up comedians. It introduced me to Brent Butt and John Wing.
YTV My kids always watch this, and it airs Buffy.
Treehouse Not my fave, but my daughter is addicted to it, so I thought it deserved a mention based on the number of hours it is on here.
