Dammit, Snooooop, I was seriously gonna post that, figuring no one else would possibly have picked it. Great minds…
Let’s see, guitar solos: Flip Your Wig and Celebrated Summer by Husker Du Complete Control by The Clash Birth, School, Work, Death by The Godfathers
Riffs: Safe European Home, The Clash Nowhere Is My Home, The Replacements All My Loving and Ticket To Ride, The Beatles Louie Louie, The Kingsmen Pinball Wizard, The Who You Really Got Me, The Kinks Sitting Still, R.E.M. Blitzkrieg Bop, The Ramones Walking On Sunshine, Katrina & The Waves We’re Not Deep, The Housemartins Holidays In The Sun, The Sex Pistols I Walk The Line, Johnny Cash Kiss, Prince
Ooh, yeah, Glenn Tillbrook has got serious chops. His solos on “Another Nail In My Heart” and “Black Coffee In Bed” are nothing short of astounding. They sound more like bebop solos than rock solos.
Hmmm - I don’t see a smilie there, so I’ve got to point out that as much as I love Mick Ronson, he never was a Rolling Stone. That was Mick Taylor, and his guitar work on “Get Yer Ya Ya’s Out” was indeed brilliant.
Another favorite is Peter Green’s work on the old Fleetwood Mac classic “Oh Well.”
Too many to even begin to list. But my all time favorite chord in a rock solo has to be at the end of the solo in The Stones’ Sympathy For The Devil where it sounds like Keith punches his guitar in the gut and knocks the wind out of it.
I’ll go you one better than that: the original uncut version of “The Bomber” from The James Gang Rides Again. Walsh goes into a slide rendition of Maurice Ravel’s “Bolero”, which was cut out of all the reissues of that track (rumor is at the insistence of Ravel’s family for copyright reasons). It was only finally re-released on Walsh’s retrospective collection called Look What I Did. Now THAT was a gem of a solo.
I’m just learning how to play guitar (see you CAN teach an old dog new tricks - LOL) I can’t wait until I can actually play a song.
My best friend can play Seek and Destroy all the way through. I envy him. It sounds awesome. That’s my goal. I heard him play it so often that I knew the guitar parts by heart (in my head - not playing them myself) before I even knew the name of the song.
If I can play that song one of these days, I’ll be MORE than satisfied.
As far as favorites - Seek and Destroy is definitely one of mine. The rest are too numerous to mention. I’m just a rock/metal freak.
The opening tear from the drums into the guitar on Dire Straits’ Money for Nothing.
Jimi’s solo in Watchtower.
Ditto Sealemon88 for most of Stevie Ray
The riffs from Crazy Train
…but how very odd it is that no-one has yet mentioned Freebird. Believe me, I’m not - I hate that dam’ song. Just that I know there’s a FEW Southerners on the SDMB and I thought most everybody below Maryland worshipped Skynnrd. ;)
Ok, are we talking riffs or solos? Very different beasts. Oh well, I’ll list a few of each that have moved me in one way or another.
Riffs-
Day Tripper (Beatles)
Mean Streets (Van Halen)
The Wonton Song (Led Zeppelin)
Ticket to Ride (Beatles)
Barracuda (Heart)
Solos
Sultans Of Swing - (Dire Straits)

Since I’ve been lovin you (Led Zep)
