Favorite Hot Sauces

I’m pretty fond of Jamaican Hellfire, but I usually go through it too quickly to make it a frequent purchase. For the heavy duty cooking, I use either Dave’s Insanity Sauce or Endorphin Rush (despite the rather savage metallic aftertaste). Lighter stuff, plain old Tabasco (mmm…garlic flavor…).

I agree completely. It is not a “Dave’s Insanity Sauce” but it is the sauce we use at the table every single day. Fantastic stuff.

Cholula for a milder, more flavorable sauce.

Dave’s Insanity or Dave’s Ultimate Insanity for when it’s time to get serious.

Incidentally, Hooters makes a flavor of wings called Nuclear that’s not on the menu, but it’s made with a mix of the Hooter’s sauce and Daves Insanity sauce. IMO, they aren’t as tasty as the 911 wings but they are pretty damn spicy!

Cholula is a great sauce! Louisiana is a good cheap hot sauce as well. Tobasco Chipotle has some really good flavor, even if it isn’t the hottest.

I love that Count Cholula cereal!!

Zenster, I prefer Tabasco for precisely the same reasons! I feel that tomatoes are little more than filler in hot sauces and salsas.

I’m with the Dave’s Insanity Sauce crowd as well. Good flavor, intense heat. Rated 80,000 SU here. It’s no longer the hottest, but it’s already in the realm where more heat is only bragging rights.

Can anybody tell us about Satan’s Blood? A sadistic friend bought a bottle for me, but I have not been over to get it yet. He says he was made to sign a waver of liability before he could take it (a gimmick, I’m certain).

For pure heat Dave’s Insanity Sauce is the hottest thing that can really be called a sauce (hotter liquids are more food additives than sauces). But the best chili sauce I find is an easy one to make at home.
1/2 cups rice wine vinegar
6-12 finely chopped Thai Chilies
3-6 finely chopped cloves of Garlic
2-4 teaspoons of sugar.

Keep in the fridge for at least a week before using, lasts for years in the fridge (but make sure the Garlic is finely chopped, so that the vinegar gets through all the garlic, big bits of garlic will remain alkali inside, possible breeding place for botulism)

MacDairmuid, there’s no tomato product in Crystal. I find it has a more ripe flavor than Tabasco and merely used the adjective “tomatoey” for that reason.

Ah, well…

I’m standing by what I said–with a note to the effect that it does not apply in this case. Oops.

Hmm…my pepper sauce of choice is Trappey’s Red Devil Cayenne Pepper Sauce. For chips & salsa, I enjoy Ana’s Salsa and Texas Lava, both fresh salsas made hereabouts.

Welcome to The Crunchy Frog! Have fun!

There is a tradition here that a New Doper sends food to the first person to greet her or him.

Cholula on my quesadillas.
Tabasco in my chile.
Lizano in my black beans and rice. (Not hot, just really tasty table sauce.)
Srirachi with lots of asian foods.
Thai garlic and chili paste for cooking (what else) Thai food.
Fresh various chilis for indian food.

Same thing happened to me. Nothing worked in soothing the heat. Not ice cream, or chocolate milk, or mouthwash, or crackers, or anything else I tried. Having said that, a drop or two in some chili or buffalo wings does add a nice flavor, as well as a considerable amount of heat.

A question for you Qadgop

I love spicy foods and yet, I am constantly being told that I am going to give myself an ulcer and that spicy foods aren’t good for you. What are your thoughts on this?

I’m not Qaddie, but from what I understand, most ulcers aren’t caused spicy foods. They’re caused by a bacterial infection which can be easily treated by a combination of Pepto-Bismal and antibiotics.

That’s right, Tuck. musicguy, perform a search on helicobacter pylori bacteria. It just feels like some of those habanero sauces are perforating your stomach lining.

Another vote for Dave’s Insanity Sauce. damn good stuff.

That’s what I’ve been led to believe as well. In fact, I’ve heard that if your stomach is healthy, spicy food actually decreases your chance of an ulcer by irritating the stomach lining causing it to thicken. However, once the damage is done, spicy food will certainly be painful.

Best I’ve ever had: Marie Sharp’s in Belize, on Caribbean chicken and rice. Yum!

Scorned Woman is a good sauce. It doesn’t have the over powering vinegar taste of many sauces and has a nice blend
of peppers. Farmer Brothers made a nice inexpensive cayenne
based sauce that was really good. Dave’s Insanity Sauce for
heat.

I think the best I’ve ever had is the Crying Tongue sauce from Gil’s Gourmet in California. Smoked habaneros give it excellent flavor and a nice kick.

For asian style, I like Lan Chi Chili Paste with Garlic (with a green and white label). But I like that because it’s the closest I’ve found in a grocery store to something my brother once sent back from Taiwan that had an even richer flavor.

I’ll second (or fifth) a vote for Scorned Woman and the various varieties of Tabasco. But I’ve never been a fan of Frank’s or Dave’s as neither has ever struck me as having much flavor.

I’ll also add (even though it’s not quite a sauce) the green salsa from Burritoville here in NYC.
