Nope, I love to crank that one up.
“Fool in the Rain” has been my favorite Led Zeppelin song since I first heard it. Interesting to note that this song would not be written today as cell phones would make the circumstance in the song highly unlikely.
Rock and Roll: Bonham would’ve been the first to tell you it was a direct lift from Little Richard’s Keep a Knockin’: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rYr7I4gOSXk
Hot Dog: I think it’s a fine song! Silly in its way, but no different than the Stones going for it with The Girl With the Far Away Eyes. I prefer the Stones’ song, but enjoy the Zep one, too.
The Crunge
“Where’s that confounded bridge?”
In the Light
Ten Years Gone
Over the Hills and Far Away
Me too
- When the levee breaks
2 / 3 depending on the day. Kashmir / Ramble on
And for some unexplained reason Boogie with Stu has a special place in heart!
Oh, I had forgotten about this one… When I don’t have the appetite for 10 minutes of Zep I’ll groove to “Celebration Day” from The Song Remains the Same.
I love Page’s guitar in that simple, little, pop song. The studio version of that tune doesn’t reflect the same level of *commitment *from the boys and falls horribly flat. But the live version is fun, fun, fun!
I love that song. So many rock bands have a country song or two, it’s always a great change of pace.
Your Time Is Gonna Come, as preformed by Dread Zeppelin.
I honestly can’t break this down below the album level. For me, the “Houses of the Holy” album is a juicy nugget of Zep perfection. It has hard rockers, soft ballads, and Zep doing the weird alien trippy encounter thing (No Quarter, if you hadn’t guessed). I like IV and II a lot, too, but I LOVE Houses.
“Hey, Hey, What Can I Do?” has been mine for the last while. It’s sweet, sad, beautiful and simple , like the best folk songs. And the inflections Robert gives the lines “lookin’ for my street corner girl” and “gunna leave her where the guitars play” are just …heavenly and ineffable.
I would have to go with “Babe I’m Gonna Leave You”
“Heartbreaker”
I’ve always loved “The Rain Song”. It’s a great song to listen to right before going to bed, it’s just such a lovely, dreamy melody.
Other than that, in no particular order:
- “Trampled Under Foot”
- “Tangerine”
- “Moby Dick”
- “When the Levee Breaks”
- “Going to California”
- “Good Times Bad Times”
- “I Can’t Quit You Baby”
- “Ramble On”
- “The Battle of Evermore”
(My LEAST favorite has to be “The Crunge”. I just cannot stand that song. It’s probably the only Zeppelin tune I don’t like)
(Oh, and Stone Temple Pilots did a seriously kickass cover of “Dancin’ Days”. It’s probably the best Zeppelin cover I’ve ever heard.
Good one! Couple of other nice covers: Here is Black Crowes doing Nobody’s Fault but Mine (live), and a version of No Quarter by Tool.
Oh man, I love so many Zeppelin songs, it’s hard to pick just one.
Let’s say this week it’s “Custard Pie,” just ahead if “How Many More Times.”
Tough to pick just one… or even 10. My list has also evolved as my musical tastes have evolved - whereas I used to focus almost solely on Jimmy’s guitar work WRT Zeppelin, I now have a much greater appreciation for Bonzo and JPJ’s incredible foundation for that guitar work, and how it all works together.
Hearing damage & tinnitus be damned, though - when “In My Time of Dying” comes up in my music rotation, the volume goes to 11.
Also chalk me up as a fan of “Hot Dog”.
Then, out of left field, comes a vote for “Royal Orleans”. IMO, Plant is way off his game here, Jimmy is just kinda noodling around… but Bonzo and JPJ are knocking it out of the park.
If you’ve never seen it, check out the “live Denmark radio” video on the 'Tube, from March '69. Words cannot describe.
“Gallows Pole.” I’ve always like the acoustic guitar in this song, I like the way the arrangement speeds up and becomes more and more frantic as the narrator’s plight becomes more and more desperate.
I was watched this video yesterday, Page & Plant watching a band play Stairway to Heaven
Just watch their faces, especially towards the end, Page is enthralled and Plant has tears in his eyes.
Anyway, it got me thinking, what are Led Zep fans favourite song? because I guess not Stairway as we’ve all heard it 1000 times. But it is a great song!
Here’s my top 10:
Kashmir
Custard Pie
Ten Year’s Gone
Four Sticks
Going to California
Misty Mountain Hop
The Rover
In My Time of Dying
The Wanton Song
What Is and What Should Never Be
