Favorite Movies w/ Marlon Brando?

It’s surprising how very few Brando movies are on my Favorites list. (Bogart, Buscemi, De Niro, Keitel, Pitt, Washington and especially Nicholson each appear multiple times.) Godfather is my #2, Apocalypse Now my #39 (without Brando it would be #20). The only other Brando flicks that make my Top 100 are On The Waterfront and The Score. And Brando had only a bit part in the otherwise-excellent heist film The Score.

Some Brando films, e.g. Teahouse of the August Moon, were horrible. I watched Last Tango in Paris only once, decades ago. It didn’t appeal then; maybe I should watch it again.

Show of hands if anyone else has even seen this movie: Désirée (1954). Brando does a great job as the young Napoleon. “In Marseilles, France in 1794, Désirée Clary [Jean Simmons], a young millinery clerk, becomes infatuated with Napoleon Bonaparte, but winds up wedding General Jean-Baptiste Berandotte [Michael Rennie], an aide to Napoleon who later joins the forces that bring about the Emperor’s downfall.”

Brando is great as that cocky upstart Napoleon. Check him out! And here. This was early in Brando’s career. He was only 30.

Yeah, another vote for Guys and Dolls, mostly because it’s so different from his usual oeuvre (though I always like watching him). And another thing you don’t expect - he can actually dance a bit (!)

My favorite Brando films are Guys and Dolls and On the Waterfront… but neither is my favorite because of Brando.

It’s hard to separate his performances from great movies. I love The Godfather and his work on it was ok but just serviceable.

His best acting was in One-Eyed Jacks in my humble opinion. Great movie too. Trivia: he directed it!

Also, Brando insisted on wearing the famous Superman symbol on his clothing. This established it in canon that the S within the shield is the symbol of the House of El.
