Shall We Dansu? In the original Japanese with subtitles.
It started just as I was heading off to bed after a long, long day and I still sat there mesmerised until it finished (about 2.30am). I cannot see how the Richard Gere version (which hadn’t been made when I saw Dansu) could have included the subtleties of cultural restrictions that made this movie so perfect. I have not seen either version since.
The memory of it still makes me smile.
Schindler’s List. The subject matter is too devastating. I haven’t seen it since it was in the theaters, and if I don’t see it for another 20 years, I’ll be okay with it.
The Departed. Finally a violent cop movie where the violence is just plain damn ugly.
