Indeed, 1981 and Spandau Ballet were at the absolute forefront of the “New Romantics” movement.
But my personal faves of that era were bands like Echo and The Bunnymen et al.
Oddly, they all seemed to have USA success circa 1985 but 1981 was the golden year for that mob.
Teardrop Explodes. Souxsie and The Banshees. Even “Primary” and “A Forest” by The Cure - hits long before their USA success.
There’s also Julie Covington’s “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina,” which was the only Andrew Lloyd Webber song to reach #1.
The Martha of Martha and the Muffins (a Toronto band) was Martha Ladly, who is no relation of Martha Davis of the Motels (an LA band.)
Even ? and the Mysterians aren’t true one-hit wonders, having placed another song (“I Need Somebody”) in the top 40 during 1966.
