Favorite places to fly in Flight Simulator?

I just got a new PC with Microsoft Flight Simulator 2002 Professional. It’s amazing with all the graphic options on 100%. It’s a totally different experience with with new features, like terrain elevations and ATC.

So what are your favorite airports to fly out of? I find that airports in areas having major elevation differences are the funnest to fly out of. My two favorites are airstrips in Lukla, Nepal and in Black Rapids, Alaska. If anyone knows any neat airports like these with big dropoffs, please post them. If you havn’t already, take off from Lukla and see what I’m talking about. I can only imagine what it would be like to take off from there in real life.

p.s., Since Meigs Field is now closed, what are you nominations for the new default airport?

I always liked to fly under bridges and between tall buildings.

Yeah, that was before 9/11…

Try KAVX on Catalina Island just off the coast of California, about 50-60 N.M. S.S.W. of Los Angeles.
3000’ x 75’ strip with 1600’ dropoffs at each end, dare you to try and get anything bigger than the Beechcraft Barron in there.

I remember seeing a package that had a collection of what was supposed to be the world’s most difficult airports for Flight Simulator. All I can remember was that one was on a small Caribbean island and another was on Gibraltor. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

The highest airstrip in the world, in Leh, Kashmir, India.

I’d love to fly through the Grand Canyon, a la Will Smith in ID4. (I dunno if he was indeed flying through the GC, but it sure looked like it). What a rush that would be!

Kalashnikov (interesting username, after the arms designer?), I know what you mean about the buildings. I used to have an old mac that had a flight simulator on it. Rather boring, but I could lift off out of NYC, among other places. I would routinely crash into buildings rather than try and land. The World Trade Center was a favorite, easy to find, if I missed one I’d probably hit the other.

:frowning: shudder

Back in the '80s, I had an early version of FS for my Commodore 64. One of the few features that came with the package by default was the Twin Towers…

… and yes, I used to crash into them on purpose. :frowning:

If I knew then what I know now…

Add me to the “used to crash into the Twin Towers” pile. Back in my depressed days I used to pretend to crah into skyscrapers with angsty music playing.

I miss my depressed days*.
*No I don’t.

That Catalina Island is neat, I never saw that before. Thanks.

Can anybody find an airport code for that airport in Leh, India? I’m having trouble finding it. Also, I would like to fly out of the highest commerical airport in the world (Bangdag, China), but for some dumb reason FlightSim doesn’t have many airports in China.

Anyone know if there is a DL for the new WTC? I went ahead & installed the old ones again (since for some assinine reason they were removed --I mean, you can set the date for before 2001 & all), but am curious to know if there are DLs for the new Leibskind designs. I think that would be pretty nifty. [/hijack]

My fav place to fly out of there is from Provo, UT. Don’t know why, I guess it just looks nice. That’s one thing I love about FS, the way you can go anywhere on earth & it looks reasonably like the real-life counterpart. Infact, I have often “visited” places I am about to go to for the first time IRL. Pretty cool I think…

I think they won’t put on the game until they’re actually built, but maybe I’m wrong.

Does anybody know if there is any way to install the World Trade Center on Flightsim 2002? I think they should at least be on there if you set the date to before 9/11. I don’t understand the date function on the game. Has anybody found any scenery that changes with the date? The only thing that changes is the Berlin wall, from what I’ve experimented with. I kinda wish the game would come with a scenery editor so I could add my own stuff.

Simviation.com, Scenery department is where I found the WTC I use. It’s fairly detailed, & has all the other bldgs in the plaza too.

I was just curious about the new ones going up there. Also, the ESB that comes with it looks pretty crappy. Still looking for another one.

Can I suggest Sion in Switzerland and Courcheval in France (LSGS and LFLJ respectively) - both
great approaches and there’s always EGLC if you like a 5 degree approach and water on 4 sides:-).
