Castleton Mall

I grew up in Kokomo and for a few years lived on the same street as “Mr. Scott.” I don’t remember them being that huge, but I do remember the Big Scott was my favorite burger. I knew I was an official teenage boy when I ordered a second. I loved them but remember them more like a Whopper than 5 Guys. Also the original Ponderosa was in Kokomo (behind the Markland Mall). Another Kokomo place was the Sweet Shop in the strip mall by Maple Crest. They had the best greasy burgers you could find. Hinkle’s in Bloomington were very close.
heh did ya know any wards or roaches or 5 other clans in town I’m related too …
ahh the old sweet shop … the only place that didn’t think I was a weirdo for having chocolate sauce on bubble gum ice cream … I think the last time I was there they had just closed down …of course I remember hills being there too… for some reason hills had an insane number of Atari games to the point I didn’t know Atari had went out because they always had them …
erm I meant there in town they were closed
Virginia Beach VA - near Military Circle, back in the 80s a place called Grate Steak. You were seated, ordered drinks and either the grill and salad/side buffet or off a menu. If you knew what you were doing you always went for the grill and buffet because you picked out your slab of meat, tossed it on a huge charcoal grill and cooked it to order yourself. There were baked potatoes wrapped in foil you could toss on to heat up along side your steak/chop/quarter chicken, and the salad bar had potato topping as well. There was also Texas Toast you could grill as well. Wonderful, all the fun of grilling without having to deal with the grill at home =)
I also remember other places mentioned - Arthur Treachers, Lums, Ground Round, Ponderosa, Shakeys [I went to one of the remaining ones a couple years ago and it definitely was nothing like I remembered, it was a pretty boring pizza and salad bar sort of place. I remember the old school thin crust pizza fondly, but the one that we ended up with was pretty much identical to Domino/Pizza Hut overly sweet formulaic pizzas]
Uncle Phaedrus has all sorts of recipes from closed places. Great place to kill hours surfing recipes =)
Thanks for the link.
Yes I did as a matter of fact. Rachael, Cynthia, and Cheryl. I’ll let you sort out the last names to protect the innocent.
The ones I miss all still exist, but are nowhere near where I live anymore:
-
Whataburger: We used to have one in Ventura, CA when I was a kid, and it was a treat to go there on a Saturday afternoon. Their fries were really good.
-
Port of Subs: My all-time favorite sub shop (chain or otherwise). There used to be one in San Luis Obispo, CA (which was where I discovered it) but now there aren’t any within about a hundred miles of the Bay Areas. I would go out of my way for one of their subs, but that’s a bit too far.
-
Bob’s Big Boy - Their burgers were good, and their Silver Goblet milkshakes were fantastic. I found one in San Diego a couple years ago, though, and it wasn’t as good as I remembered, so either my memory is faulty or my tastes have changed. I used to enjoy reading those horrible Big Boy comic books, when I was a little kid (I realized even then that they were horrible).
Oh, and another vote for Shakey’s. They had wonderful pizza, and their potato things were delicious (and horrible for you). I forget what they were called.
Ohhhh…Bill Knapp’s. How could I have missed mentioning them? It was a family ritual to eat at Bill Knapp’s after every Notre Dame game. They were adjacent to the campus and since we were regulars, they would let us park there and car pool our group into campus with one big van to save us all some money.
They had quite good food, but the one thing that i’ve never forgotten was their wonderful cinnamon ice cream. It was awesome with a warm piece of apple pie, or by itself.
They were called mojos. I worked there one summer and prepared / fried thousands of them. Funny, I had totally forgotten about that particular menu item until I read this.
