Favorite Saladbar

:smack: Of course they do! Over by the baked potatoes and fixin’s…would you believe I never thought of snagging some from over there for my salad? I’m such a sheep sometimes. …baaaa…no bacon bits on the salad bar…baaa…no bacon for my salad…baaa

That’s been my number one complaint about many of their soups for some time now. Did they get a big discount on potatoes or something? Not every soup needs potatoes, people!

Fogo de Chau is a chain Brazilian steakhouse, and we have one here in Indy. The salad bar is nothing short of amazing. I don’t feel bad getting a full plate, even with unlimited meat in my very near future. The selection is simply incredible.

Instead of Sizzler, we had Ponderosa… I remember there were always all kinds of Sizzler references in comedy, movies and pop culture back in the '80’s… took me a while to learn that these were West Coast references, and I should just substitute Ponderosa for Sizzlers… no not everybody knows what a Sizzler is. Sort of like Hardees and Carls Jr.

Been many many years since I’ve been to one, and it was sort of like a Golden Corral before they existed around here, but Ryan’s had the best Salad Bar around. Back in the day they had these huge golden, soft, and warm homemeade yeast rolls to go with the salad.

Never been to a Sizzlers and similarly, probably will never visit a Sweet Tomatoes… too regional.

Ponderosa was the best, although it wouldn’t exactly count as “salad”. Ham chunks, bacon bits, and croutons drizzled in a warm cheese sauce was delicious, though.

Never been to a Sizzlers and similarly, probably will never visit a Souplantation Sweet Tomatoes… too regional. What’s up with Souplantation? What kind of antebellum slavery inference is that? I can’t help but visualize a crew on a plantation, singin’ Swing Low and pickin’ vegetables and sweet tomatoes for your soup and salad.

I had never heard of Sweet Tomatoes but looked them up and see there is one 20 minutes away from my house. So I think I have to try it. Thanks for the suggestion.

To me, a ‘salad’ is a way to convey proteins and blue cheese dressing into my mouth!
Had lunch at a Ruby Tuesday’s today, and they get high marks for:
Having baby spinach and baby field greens instead of just iceberg lettuce.
Diced ham. Real bacon bits. Shredded cheese. Dried cranberries (I like that little hint of sweet amid all the tangy/meaty/fatty). Hard cooked eggs. I do wish they had fresh peas. Love them in my salad!
They also have croutons made of rye bread instead of just white or Italian bread. Their blue cheese dressing is certainly not award-winning, but it’s not bad. Oh, and they have sunflower seeds, which make a nice texture on top of the dressing.

The Waldorf salad on their bar is pretty tasty, too, imho.

There used to be a great salad bar in the mall I work at. It was an independently-run place, and they had a fantastic selection of lettuces, fruits, toppings, dressings. It was pay by the pound, so if I was short on cash, I could get as little or as much as I could afford, and arrange things the way I like in my bowl. Then the mall decided to not renew their lease, and gave their space to the Greek restaurant above them, who opened a salad and sandwich place…but they assemble it for you, and you have to choose from their arrangement and quantities (ie: you can have lettuce with one, two or three add-ins, plus one protein…) and it became very expensive to get a salad, so I don’t, anymore. I don’t want to pay 7 or 8 dollars for a salad and not get to choose to have fewer tomatoes and more cukes and just a smidgen of egg and cheese and a sprinkling of seeds.

When the new owner came around handing out flyers, I expressed my dissatisfaction with the new arrangement. She got very huffy and told me that MOST people think serve-yourself salad bars are unsanitary and that Cleveland is SO behind the times, that the rest of the country has moved BEYOND salad bars and they were offering a GOURMET experience. And then, to top it off, even though our mall is open until 7 pm, they close at 2:30,which is about a half-hour before my normal break time…so I really don’t ever get to go there anyhow. I really really miss the old place, with the Portuguese guys and the Hispanic guys and the hot food bar with meatloaf and pierogis…sigh.

I would vote for Sweet Tomatoes but there aren’t any near me. The major chain in my neck of the woods is Fresh Choice. I prefer to go to Sizzler.
