“That’s the beauty of it! It doesn’t DO anything!”
“You have meddled with the primal forces of Nature, Mr. Beale! And I won’t have it!” - Network
You are so right! :smack:
It’s been too long since I’ve seen it - I’ll have to drug my wife to get her to watch the extended edition with me…
How about a few more:
Total Recall - Twoooooo Weeeeeeeeks!
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels - The big reveal, when Michael Cain says “Isn’t she wonderful!”
Gattaca - When Dr. Lamar gives Vincent a lesson in peeing.
The Princess Bride - I want my father back, you son of a bitch!
Animal House - Guess what I am now?
Might have been that one. Spaceships everywhere over a huge planet, Obi wan and Anakin wind up riding a shot-up Star Destroyer all the way down to the surface.
Lawrence of Arabia the match trick scene and the no prisoners scene.
This http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q7vtWB4owdE from Animal House.
Ah, for me it’s the scene from More’s trial. He’s been silent all through it, hoping silence is construed as consent. When he’s condemned, and knows he won’t get out of this alive anyway, he finally speaks his mind, including where he says his guilty verdict
“is…because… I… would… not… bend…* to the marriage*!”
In Stalag 17, Sefton realizes who the real traitor is, then smokes a cigar. “Ach, so!”
Heavy Metal, Taarna bar scene. Devo on stage (“We’re through being cool”)
I should hang my head in shame for not thinking Indianapolis Speech.
Yes. I like how Quint’s attitude, etc., changes after he’s played out his bag of tricks and asks Hooper what can he do with his goodies. Hooper posits injecting strychnine into the shark, and Quint says, That little needle through his thick skin? with no snark at all.
If anybody on Jaws deserved an Oscar, it was screenwriter Carl Gottlieb. Turning out a half dozen script pages on the fly every night for filming the next day. Sometimes the best stuff is done by the seat of your pants.
Does anyone remember an early Internet joke about this scene - it follows the life of a guard as he is let out of prison after years inside, then has a celebration with his family etc, then has to do one simple job and gets shot by Indy. A bit like the mutated sea bass scene from Austin Powers I guess, a point of view funny that shows things from the guard’s situation…
My Dog Skip, Skip is old and the dad helps him up on the kid’s bed.
The Outlaw Josie Wales
“dyin ain’t much of a livin,boy”
I came in to mention Alice’s suicide scene in the Last of the Mohicans, but I see it’s already been brought up. So I’ll go with one from the opposite side of the spectrum:
The newspaper boy falls off his bike in While You Were Sleeping. I bust a gut every time, I have no idea why. It’s such a tiny moment, but so unexpected.
I’m reminded of a scene from, I think, Nothing Sacred. Our hero, a reporter, is visiting a New England town, trying to get background info on our heroine.
He gets the cold shoulder from everyone he meets, the classic New England brushoff of an outsider.
And then, as he walks down the street, a little kid dashes out of the bushes, ** bites him on the butt**, and disappears.
It was so unexpected I busted out laughing uncontrollably.
Cher’s “All the Young Dudes” speech in Clueless
The “Now what?” scene in Finding Nemo
The old stories in When Harry Met Sally, especially the couple who talks at the same time.
The night vision scene in Silence of the Lambs.
The package delivered at the end of Seven.
The chase scene in Raising Arizona.
The fight between Helen Keller and Annie Sullivan in the original The Miracle Worker. One of the top 5 best fights I’ve ever seen in a movie.
The kitchen scene in Jurassic Park.
The dance scene from Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion.
Maybe it’s stupid, but the random song from My Best Friend’s wedding was always a favorite of mine.
Speaking of musical numbers, not sure if they should count, but if they do, two of them that I think were absolutely amazing scenes in movies were “America” from West Side Story and “Heaven’s Eyes” from The Prince of Egypt. Those two movies would just not be complete if those scenes/numbers hadn’t been included.
Hehehe…I want my two dollars!
Which reminds me: I want my two dollars!
From No Country for Old Men: What’s the most you’ve ever lost in a coin toss?
The final scene of The Third Man, where Holly has his last illusion shattered.
The opening scene of Fargo, which introduces an uncredited character: the weather.
The ice scraper scene from Fargo. I love the cinematography, and how the scene illustrates two of Jerry’s key character traits: his ineffectuality and his doggedness: how he keeps plodding ahead regardless of all the setbacks he encounters.
From The Good, the Bad and the Ugly: When you have to shoot, shoot, don’t talk.
Cab Calloway singing Minnie the Moocher in The Blues Brothers. Not only did he give an astonishing performance, but the musicians look absolutely enchanted to be playing for him.
