Favorite SK characters

OK, Zoggie, this one’s for you. Who is your favorite Stephen King character, be it villain or hero? Let’s cover least favorites, just to see who gets named.

OK, one of my favorites is Oy from the Dark Tower. (I’m only half-kidding. i really do get a kick out of Oy, and often wish there were a stuffed animal version of him that I could own.)

More seriously, I’ll take Roland the Gunslinger. He is more than just an archetype, he actually grows and changes between DT: GS and Wizard and Glass. A man with an incredible will, a belief in doing what’s right, and an obsession which has already cost him dearly and shaped the majority of his life, and who knows what may lie ahead for him?

Best villain goes to Flagg. He’s just so utterly cool, infuriatingly hard to get rid of, an embodiment of all that can go wrong in the heart of a human being (not that he’s human…)

Least favorite character goes to Jessie from Gerald’s Game. King wnet on an odd feminist streak, giving us three books: Gerald’s game, dolores claiborne, and rose madder. dolores claiborne is a wonderful book, RM is tolerable, but gerald’s Game is just awful. the other two books have protagonists who are very sympathetic, and Dolores has her own distinct voice that is also very funny. But Jessie has nothing at all goin for her; not funny, not terribly smart, no chance to interact wiuth anyone other than the “villain” (don’t get me started on him); jessie is King’s version of eleamor from Jackson’s Hill House the book, not any of the movies); totally absorbed in herself. I liked the poor woman from The regulators ( the one who acts as a mother to Seth) better; she wasn’t the brightest person, but she was at least insighful. I would have liked it better if she’d died in that room, I think.

OK, it’s y’all’s turn now…

–There must be some way out of here, said the black mage to the thief.

Togepi- I’m sorry i haven’t responded yet! Just been busy. Ah what the hell, tonight I will…I want to give this oh so wonderful SK thread the respect it deserves.

I totally agree with you about Jessie! I noticed that feminist streak too.

I would have to say that my favorite villian is Trashcan Man from The Stand. It’s kind of one of those things where you look at everything that happened to him which shaped his wierdness, and say, “You know, that could happen to almost anyone!”

As far as good guys go, I really liked Dennis from Christine. Actually Arnie too. That book was a very clear depiction of a lot of stuff that goes on in high school. Not to mention that it scared the crap out of me!

The most let down I have ever been by a villian in an SK book is by the giant spider at the end of IT. I was scared until I thought of it as some cheesy B horror movie type spider, and then it was over for me.

When I was an undergraduate (mid 1980s), I took a course in American Popular Literature. One of the books we did was Christine.

The professor’s opinion of this book was that it was “anti-feminist.”

Maybe Stephen King got wind of this lecture and decided to show him up.

John Smith and Greg Stillson from “The Dead Zone” are my favorite good and bad guys. Loved the movie, and Walken and Sheen did good work.

I heard today that there’s going to be a TV miniseries of this book.

You just have to wonder why producers don’t leave well enough alone.

Damn…too many to choose from…
I guess I’ll have to do a top five.

Wolf, from The Talisman is definatly one of my favorites. He was so innocent, so trusting, and he loved Jack so much. He was the only character (in any book, not just SK) I ever cried over.

Since I love Wolf so much, I certainly have to love Tom Cullen (I just know he was Wolf’s twinner) from The Stand. He had the same sweet, innocent qualities as Wolf, and was just a selfless when he infiltrated Flagg’s camp in Vegas.

Stu Redmond was also a great character from The Stand. I had a bit of a crush on him.

Mike Anderson from Bag Of Bones is also on my list. I felt true compassion for him, my heart broke for him in that book.

Carrie White is on my list as well, mainly because I think I identify with her on some level. Man, I hated high school
M-O-O-N, that spells Rose

Wicked Blue - We think alike. Wolf is definitely one of my favorites. (I cried, too.) As is Tom Cullen. M-O-O-N, that spells Tom Cullen. I also like Detta/Odetta in the Dark Tower. Another favorite would have to be Dolores Claiborne. (duh!) Not so much because she’s likeable, but because she’s a tough, strong broad who did what she had to do. I loved the way SK told that story, exclusively through her monologue.

Characters I loved to hate would be Flagg, of course, and that awful nose-picking king in Eye of the Dragon. Also Pennywise, and Greg Stillson.

Characters I didn’t like at all? Hard to say, because I love the way SK can make any character feel real and alive, but I guess the bad guy in The Dark Half, and the woman in The Tommyknockers. Those are my 2 least favorite books by SK.

Pennywise, the dancing clown, without question.

All my other faves (Wolf, Flagg, Roland, Pennywise) have been mentioned, so I’ll shoot for new ones:

Favorite goodie- John Coffey. Guess you could throw Paul Edgecombe in there, too.

Favorite baddie- Annie Wilkes (Misery). God, she was nuts.

I’ve put this off long enough.

Arnie from Christine…again, i’ve said it before and i’ll continue to say it, this book is a horror classic. I could identify with it and I got it on so many levels. The garage scene gets to me for the suspense, though its the charachterization I like here. really butchered the spelling off that word, I’m afraid… I liked Arnie b/c he wasn’t a martyred “good guy” but because he was really confused and misunderstood…somehow I could really dig that.
I can see the anti-feminist thing. The char. of Leigh really bothered me. More so the second time around.

Okay I also really liked The Shining for the chars. of basically everyone in the book (except maybe that “officious prick” Stu Ullman- don’t think anyone could relate to this guy). My fave char. in the book would definitely be Jack, mainly because you can’t classify him as “good” or “evil”- he has the right intentions, and no matter how many decisions he makes and no matter how badly he screws up his life, you can understand him. Plus there’s the writer- thing…I liked that.

Okay i’ve gone on enough but I want to give a few honorable mentions. (If I gave everyone the fave rank, we’d be here all night and I want to watch the Simpsons.) Louis Creed in Pet Sem was done well, IT is superb for its characters (I especially loved Ben Hapscomb).

Best bad guy- I’ll have to side with you guys and say Flagg. Unless you count Andre Linoge in Storm of the Century. While Storm was a movie, I think he’s one of the best villains. Also in the Stand I really liked Harold Lauder. Not at first- at first I found him annoying and chauvinistic, later on though I found him much more interesting and relatable. Not sure if he counts as evil- he does try to reedem himself towards the end.

Okay sorry it took me so long to get to this thread. Now have I left anyone out…Well if canines count as villains, Cujo wasn’t half bad, though it wasn’t his fault he did all that. He was rabid, after all. All right, done! :stuck_out_tongue:

<–

Oh Gun you would say that!!
