Inspired by the other thread, I ask who’s your favorite regular cast member?
Mine was Hartman> He could do so much! So versatile. So low key.
A few others:
John Lovitz
Eddie Murphy
Dana Carvey
Kevin Nealon
Jan Hooks
Dan Akryod
Chris Rock
Adam Sandler
Mike Myers
Chris Elliot
Will Ferrell
Dennis Miller
A soft spor in my Heart for:
Charles Rocket
SIDE ISSUE:
The most successful SNL alum poll (include future potential)
1 Murphy
2 Sandler
3 Myers
4 Rock
5 Myers
6 Dreyfuss
7 Murray
8 Miller
9 Shearer
10 Piscapo (snicker)
MY VOTE is for Murphy. Sandler is on his way to taking over Murphy, but Eddie has made a lot of money.
Will Ferrell is the funniest man alove, hands-down. He never fails to make my laugh until I’m crying and my sides ache.
Jimmy Fallon has great potential, mainly if he’d stop giggling his way through his characters. But I do have a crush on him, so he’s my second favorite.
Best ever? Phil Hartman. A gifted impressionist, and a great comic actor in other roles. Great at playing slick game show hosts and commercial announcers. He could do it all.
Runners up: John Belushi, Bill Murray, and Eddie Murphy.
That’s just if you’re considering only the performers’ SNL work, and not their movies and other works. If you consider all the other things, then Bill Murray is the best. He’s done more good movie work, in both comedy and drama, than any other SNL performer.
The “most successful” side issue should also mention Ben Stiller, even though he was an SNL performer for just a few episodes.
Dana Carvey. He makes me laugh no matter what he does. I love that guy. I’ve seen his stand up special so many times and I still crack up at every “bing!” Who can argue with the Church Lady? Or Garth? Or Massive Head Wound Harry? Or Lyle the Effeminate Heterosexual?
Also Adam Sandler. All of his songs were hilarious. Plus the Gap Girls. Passionate Audience Member. Opera Man. He was definitely a cutie, too.
Is it just me or did anyone else immediately think, “When the hell was Richard Dreyfuss a regular on SNL?”
Anyway …
My all-time favorite? I gotta go with Belushi. He was the real deal, and in on the ground floor.
I do think Will Farrell is a goddamned laugh riot, though. And Phil Hartman was very talented too.

Joe Piscopo has sucked in everything he’s ever done outside of SNL - except for Johnny Dangerously, which I just happened to watch this afternoon – “My father hung me on hook once … once.”
