What’s your favorite “Spoof” movie? I dig spoof movies, but there’s only one GREAT. I’ve always thought Young Frankenstein was the best. Bride of Frankenstein was good too, and some people consider that to be somewhat of a spoof of the original. Although Bride of Frank may have had some spoof and humor, I think it had a lot of dramatic scenes. Like when Frank (the monster) befriends a blind man but after the man hears he’s in the company of a monster, he freaks. Or at the end (spoilers I guess) where he kills himself and lets Dr. Frank live without harm before blowing up.
Anyway… best spoof?
OH… is it me, or was Teri Garr INCREDIBLY attractive in Young Frankenstein. Boy… she was cute! (maybe still is, but is wat too old for me)
Me, of course. But all you damn people keep misspelling my name.
Anyway, my favorite is and always will be Spaceballs. It managed to combine all the elements of cheesy space opera movies without always directly parodying them (unlike something like Scary Movie, which just kept switching from a parody of one film to another). Spaceballs managed to take a good chunk of material from Star Wars, Star Trek, and a bunch of other, lesser-known sci-fi movies of the '80s (hint: the Eagle I wasn’t a take-off of the Millenium Falcon) and meshed them all together seamlessly. AND it added enough of its own stuff (like the radar jamming) to make it a wonderful film.
I agree that Young Frankenstein is probably the tightest “spoofe” movie ever made. Nowever a personal favorite is Serial. If you lived through the seventies, then this is incredibly funny. What makes it so good, is that it doesn’t spoof movies per se, but all of the trendy ideas and institutions that grew up in society during that period.
Shriek if you know what I did last Friday the 13th, more commonly known as just Shriek. Manages to pay out every single crappy teen titillation horror movie ever made, and does it with a lot of style. It has this weird storyline that meanders around a mutant hybrid of Scream and IKWYDLS, except it’s even more comical than they were. This is what Scary Movie should have been.
Oh, and the fact that Tiffany Amber-Thiessen is in one of the major roles doesn’t hurt the watchability either. She plays the equivalent of Courtney Cox’s character out of Scream… the reporter named Hagatha Utslay :).
Mars Attacks It was the best spoof on old sci-fi movies of the past, not to mention the card series it was more solidly based on. It was original, silly, stupid, and just plain FUN!
I love movie parodies. Airplane! and Spaceballs are right up there near the top, but Top Secret! is my favorite.
—[thick French accent]Well, Mr. Rivières, it seems you have become how do you say een-dee-spen-see-bl?
—“Indispensable.”
—[thick French accent]Yes, that’s what I thought.
I can’t believe no one has mentioned “The Naked Gun” yet! (Well, I’m only mentioning it because it hasn’t been said yet. “Airplane!” is still the best spoof ever made.)
I’ve thought about it and as much as I love Young Frankenstein, Airplne! and Top Secret! I have to give my vote to Spaceballs.
It’s just so likeable. If I could pal around with any of the characters in the above movies, it would be Lonestar and Barf.
on a side note, holy cow they’re remaking Santa Claues Conquers the Martians which I found because Zucker of Airplane! fame is producing it. Wierd cause I saw the original on MST3K and now …
(suspiciously) “How do we know you’re not Mel Torme?”
The dancing scene I particularly love. Those guys can choreograph.
Of course, the calf/bull incident.
Hillary: My uncle was born in America.
Nick: Oh, really?
Hillary: But he was one of the lucky ones. He managed to escape in a balloon during the Jimmy Carter presidency.
Nick: Is this the potato farm?
Farmer: Yes, I’m Albert Potato.
I like all the Zuckers-Abraham-Zuckers work, back when they were a real team. Airplane! Top Secret! Naked Gun 1 and 2, the first Hot Shots, Police Squad.
Airplane! Pure and simple. Seeing Barbara Billingsly speak jive was worth the price of admission alone. Few English speaking people on earth can any longer use the word “surely” without an inward smirk at least.
I loved Spaceballs! It was the first thing i ever saw Bill Pullman in, and even now everytime I see him, i hear in my mind “It’s Lonestar!”
“Pizza the Hutt!”
“I can see your schwartz is as big as mine!”
“Goodbye Virgin Alarm”
“She’s gone from suck to blow!”
“Funny, she doesn’t look Druish…”

I love everything Zucker/Abrahams/Zucker. From Kentucky Fried Movie with “Fistful of Yen” to Spy Hard. I like the way that they’re not (totally) “in your face” comedy and parody like most of the movies today. Even now I watch one of their movies that I’ve seen 100 times and notice something new.
My favorite of all time is Hot Shots! Cary Elwes and Charlie Sheen make a great team. Especially since Cary Elwes is better known as Westley. It also has Ryan Stiles playing “Mail Man” (it’s hard to tell with the helmet, but the voice gives it away if you’re a WLIIA fan). I love the other people in that movie too: Lloyd Bridges, Jon Cryer, Valeria Golino, and the chick that played the original Buffy (in the movie).
The original Naked Gun is much much better than the sequels. Anyone who thinks otherwise is nuts.
Mel Brooks gets props for Spaceballs, which is my #2 favorite parody, but most of the other Mel Brooks movies I just don’t like.
Also, the movie CB4 is pretty damn funny. I guess it’s kind of a parody.
