Every time I do a search, I get the ones with millions of subscribers, and I don’t seem to like them, while ones with anywhere from 1k-90k seem to be more unique, especially someone like me, who loves music, movies, comedy, interviews, but looking for the stuff made before the 1980s (when I was born).
Here’s one… I like the fresh opinions, before everyone “liked” or praised an album only because it became popular, or had some association (same record label, etc)
Stars of the 1960/70s and “Blind Date” (something Downbeat used to do)… They play singles, and you hear primal reactions, and sometimes find some really cool music I wouldn’t have run into - stuff I never heard of.
John’s Furniture Repair. I love furniture refinishing channels (that don’t just paint over wood) but this one is my favorite. She has a really nice way of explaining things, etc.
Nick Zentner, prof at Central Washington U in Ellensberg, WA can sometimes be a lot of fun. He’s sort of goofy but knows a lot of stuff. His stomping ground is near my early childhood stomping ground so I know the kind of landscapes he talks about.
Note that his videos are a variety of types. E.g., straight up lectures, talks for ordinary folks, field trips, etc. Now is kind of a quiet time for him but soon he’ll be roaming around banging on rocks.
During the pre-opening of some of his lectures he spends some time greeting people who are watching. He has fans from all over the world.
I, too, am a lover of furniture restorers! Thanks for that channel ftg. Here are a couple of my favs under 100,000 subs. MissFlips and Reconstructing Emily. There are quite a few that I started watching long before they had 100,000 subscribers but have deservedly gained a much larger following.
And for non-furniture put still painting related, Len Hand’s acrylic painting tutorials.
I was browsing through books to read/prioritize, and someone mentioned this book. I clicked on the channel (as usual) and saw many of the people biographed being interviewed on here, and some other things I will try to see soon.
I’ve never been interested in anything outside of populist criticism (IMDB, for example, while never reading the professionals), but I think I would be interested in this anyway, Paul Gorman, “the rise and fall of the music press and why we miss it”
I took a quick scroll, and the title “Was Chuck Berry the strangest man in the history of rock?” has me interested in that one, too!
The guys from The Skeptics Guide to the Universe podcast have a sci-fi/fantasy review channel called Alpha Quadrant 6. Just a little over 4k subscribers.
Yeah, Nick Zentner is great. He mostly talks about Washington and I’m in Oregon but our geology is similar. I’ve discovered lots of cool place to go from him.
Anders Puck Nielsen is a military analyst from Denmark and regarding the war in Ukraine seems to be the only one who knows what is going on. 96.5K subscribers, dude deserves more subscribers, his insights are keen. It helps me understand Reporting From Ukraine 233 k subscribers, that guy knows what is going on as well and gets and gives regularly informed updates about the war but Anders gives political context.
No one else who speaks English seems to have any clue what is going on there and will post information in a timely manner.
The greatest challenge is the utter lack of interest. Even Americans that care and are Pro-Ukraine seem to not really have any time to learn about what’s going on and why. Or they look at foreign happenings through their local political lens, which is ridiculous.
Americans aren’t dying so what else is on?
Never served, but I would consider myself a lifelong student of organized violence. This is happening in real time and you can watch it, but no one seems interested except me, and I guess, you now.
