We’ve talked about that pitch before. As I recall, it was a set-up. Some sort of exhibition game or something.

No reason he should have been there.
Without even looking at the video, there’s no reason he shouldn’t have slid. He deserved to get nailed like that, even if it was an amazing play.
As a Miami Dolphins fan I may be a little biased, but I consider this play in the 1981 playoffs to be the greatest play I’ve ever seen – even though it didn’t decide the game, and Miami eventually lost. Saving that play for that moment is coaching genius, and executing it was improbable. I’d never seen it tried before, and have never seen it work since.
(The clip, from the original broadcast, is long, but the first couple of minutes sets up the context. It would be a fun play on its own, but it achieves greatness base on the moment and situation in which it happened.)
You’ve never seen a hook and ladder pass work since? I don’t think you’ved watched much football, then.
Never seen it since in the NFL. If it has, I missed it. I have zero interest in college football.
ETA: It’s “hook and lateral.”
Commonly referred to as the Hook and Ladder.
It looks like it’s been used 3 times in important college games in the past 3-4 years, but the page doesn’t mention any other NFL usages.

Best Sports Commentator Ever.
Off the top of my head I can think of a couple of times in the last few years…
Of course Boise St vs. Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y4s8vdzYwFU) which also contains the Statue of Liberty play
Also off the top of my head I remember watching Minnesota Vikings run this a few years ago. (OK- as I think about this it was more than a few years- because Randy Moss was the initial receiver. I don’t know who the cutting across receiver was.)
Of course, it sounds like I’m reaching since I have one that has to be at least 5 years old in the NFL. But I know that you see this play come up every so often.
That said- That Miami game is classic. And I agree with the original poster- that play right there was a great move by Miami in one of the greatest games ever.
Can’t argue with that. It’s like that scene in Annie Hall where you get the definitive answer in the right place at the right time.
