My favorite bit was when Diane was going on about what sound does a tree make when it falls in the forest if nobody’s there to hear it, and Coach says, “If nobody’s there, how do you know it fell? Maybe some beavers set it down there.”
There’s that one Lilith scene that my teenage brain will never forget.
And she’s been a my crush ever since.
Yes that one.
Harry The Hat and Nick Tortelli are the ones I can actually remember, so them.
Harry Anderson loved to play con men (not just on Cheers but, for example, on his TV special Hello Sucker) but I found him utterly unconvincing—even irritating—in those roles. To me me comes across more like a wannabe fanboy than a genuine grifter.
I’ll grant you that Nick Tortelli was a great character, made even greater by Dan Hayeda’s fantastic body language. It’s too bad that the Tortellis spin-off was such a bomb, though to be fair the writers ought to have known that Nick and Loretta aren’t the kind of characters who could carry an entire show.
So far Norm Peterson is enjoying a healthy lead in the “favourite main character” poll, though no supporter has spoken up as to why they find the guy so great. Apart from making a wisecrack on every entrance, Norm is pretty much the show’s everyman character. Could this be the reason for his appeal?
Incidentally, I recently found a YouTube video that compiles each and every one of Norm’s entrances:
Well, Norm was not only the Everyman, but he also ended up being the confidante of the other characters, particularly after Coach died. Only Narm could have delivered the final linee to Sam in the final episode.
Norm: “Women. Can’t live with 'em… Pass the beer nuts.”
I love Norm because he’s such a pathetic loser. The only difference between him and me is that I don’t hang out at a bar.
Makes you kind of jealous doesn’t it? For almost 2 years I hung out at a bar. It was pretty awesome. Though I was probably more like Paul sadly.
I liked Frasier the most and am kind of surprised he ranked so low.
I just love any episode where he is trying to maintain his dignity or enlighten guys like Norm and Cliff. One of my favorite moments is when he read them “fine literature”, but had to liven it up because it was too boring.
Since we seem to have exhausted both the Kirstie Alley and Cheers discussions, Let’s tie this up with an appropriate ribbon
My three favorite main characters were: Sam, Carla and Cliff. Favorite recurring characters were Carla’s son and daughter-in-law. The dude that played her son absolutely nailed playing the son of Nick Tortelli.
Favorite scene was the dream sequence where Sam’s finally hooking up with Rebecca, but can’t get his pants undone. He grabs a fireplace poker in desperation and tries prying open his belt.
Cliff’s shiny shoes was a classic episode too. To this day whenever I put on dress shoes, I can’t help but sing “Shiny shoes, shiny shoes. Ah gents, notice anything different about me today?”
I always loved the eps with Gary’s Old Towne Tavern too. Another classic was the Thanksgiving food fight. Finally got to see Vera, sorta.
I interviewed the writer of that episode. It was one of his favorites, too.
I challenge anyone to watch that scene without getting all choked-up and teary-eyed.
My favourite late season addition was Woody’s girlfriend Kelly.
Beetabagafajitaonapita?
No hablo espanol, senor.
I had no idea there were that many of them.
I liked John Cleeses appearance.
Im surprised by Diane’s low numbers. I was heavily invested in her relationship with Sam.
